I’ve never read either but I’m looking to get collected works of one of them. Which one is more entertaining to read?

I’m op and that’s me. I like short, out of shape guys with bad skin and bad haircuts who are quiet, but when they open their mouth it’s even worse. They have to have wire framed glasses too. And they shouldn’t have a job, income, or a place of their own. My father always told me to avoid these men but I have daddy issues so I go for them

Freud is an excellent writer while Jung is not. However Jung's ideas are much more interesting and expansive, and I daresay, relevant than Freud's. I would always choose Jung. But his reception really exemplifies the midwit meme. Jungians are either slobbering retards (primarily) or the smartest people in the room, and nothing in between

Jung believes in forces unseen so I would say it's an inverse bell curve with intelligence. On one hand is new age crystal people and on the other are people who are smart but trust their instincts and don't swim around in their frontal lobe only or worship the Baconian method.

If you just want to be entertained then I would say read civilization and its discontents. The only marginally entertaining read from Jung is memories, dreams, reflections, his pseudo autobiography, and it is only entertaining because he didn't really write it

Jung is more interesting. The dude was half schizophrenic. His anima and animus are also way more accurate than the mommy and daddy in dream analysis. And his mythological interpretations and applications to dream and psychology are also more interesting. Synchronicity is a fun read but all he discovers about astrological data is people fuck more at certain times of year. Red Book is schizophrenic ramblings that are much less coherent and structured than Zarathustra so if you didn't like that or get it you probably wouldn't like Red Book.

Jung is more esoteric, but also more approachable and practical. After reading some of both, I would recommend not getting their collected works as you'll ignore 9/10.

Go with Jung.

I hit a roadblock with Jung when he started getting into esoteric alchemy towards the end of Collected Works 9.1. Tried Aion and it was basically incomprehensible.
What are some good stepping stones to understanding this? I felt like I was generally understanding it when he talks about the basic concepts like archetypes and pieces of the Self, but then he starts dropping grimoire-tier stuff with no introduction.

aion is one of his final works. Though Jung had been collecting alchemical texts since 1916 he didn't really publish on it until his commentary on Wilhelm's translation of the taiyi jinhuazongzhi, the golden flower book. If you are having trouble with jung's alchemy I would suggest a chronological approach, starting with Golden Flower, then maybe Psychology and Alchemy. Aion should be the last or second-to-last thing you read. Mysterium Coniunctionis is where Jung really lays his cards on the table. It is in the final chapter of the Mysterium (his final book) that he actually espouses an intelligible ontology.
