Idk I speak German and Japanese and I can see how he got there.
German is extremely agnostic to word order in a sentence, so you can just translate the shitty Japanese word order literally if you want, it still makes sense and reads well.
Japanese also likes to do that Kofferwort thing that the Germans do, where a longer word is just two shorter words slapped together:
手首 手袋 for example are literally hand-neck for wrist and hand-sack for glove. Handgelenk and Handschuh in German.
It is wrong because many Japanese-German translations tend to be atrocious in practise, but I get why he thought that way in theory.
