Anons, I'm 22 and I'm not well read. Can you give me a list of books that'll give me a meta understanding of life. Philosophy, history, economics, lit, etc that'll give me a good understanding of my place in the world and, more broadly, how the current status quo emerged. I'm sorry if this is vague, but I hope I communicated my intent. I want to build a framework of how the world (and humans) functions so I can make sound decisions. I feel lost.

Imperialism, by Lenin. You'll learn the basic points about the unsustainable nature of capitalism, how it leads to monopoly and conflict, and how the free market is a sham, basically. All these questions are important, since we live in a capitalist system and it ordains every aspect of our life, and understanding its inner workings will give you an upper hand at controling your life a bit better.

The Origin of the Family, Engels. The unseparable friend of Marx explains in this book how the institution of family as we know it today originates as a mechanism to ensure the passing of property from one generation to the next, how private property originates as an institution, as a socially created mechanism to coordinate and police behaviour and social relationship. The text is a bit old and in some points he is not completely right, there are newer texts that rectify some of his points nowadays, but the general arguments he makes are still true to this day and have been proven right in a lot of sociological studies and historical investigations. Another book that will give insight in one of the main aspects of our lifes, the family, the basic reproductive and work unit in capitalism.

If you are very motivated and disciplined, try your hands with Capital, by Marx, but be aware, its a fucking gigantic text that can be difficult at times, specially the beggining chapters apparently. It explains the inner workings of capitalism in detail giving the reader a deep understanding on the main social force today that rules over our lives. I havent read it completely, frankly, but if you have the guts and the brain to manage it, go for it.
