Alright /lit/, does anybody have suggestions for some good books about music? Anything written by musicians, about musicians, about specific genres, time periods or the industry in general will do, just looking for some general suggestions.

I read Bob Dylan's autobiography, but don't remember too much of it. I suppose I'm advocating you skip it.

"High Fidelity" is all about music.

Cloud Atlas devotes it second best character line to a relationship between a composer and the fanatic who seems to record his final opus. Definitely recommended.

John Cage - Silence: Lectures and Writings

Very, very good.

Rip it up and Start Again - Simon Reynolds

Our Band Could be your Life - Micheal Azzard (or something)

Please Kill Me- Legs McNeil

any of the 33 1/2 series, which are all really short but really well written

and if you like Captain Beefheart I recommend Beefheart: Through the Eyes of Magic

Musicophilia sucked. Didn't go anywhere. Just a collection of anecdotes by a man who finds himself extremely interesting.

Motley Crue's 'The Dirt' is a fantastic book and it's not, contrary to popular belief, just about the decadence and partying (although there is a fair bit of it) there's some really interesting insights into the music industry in there, amongst other things. It's great, even if you don't like the band and it's one of the only books I've ever read more than once.

Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991. The author was a musician in the scene and was friends with the guys from Black Flag and Minutemen.

Scriabin: Artist and Mystic is pretty good if you're interested in Scriabin. Schoenberg's Style and Idea is pretty good if you're interested in Schoenberg. I quite liked Adorno's Philosophy of Modern Music and Scruton's Aesthetics of Music.

I love John Cage, we studied him at school and when I went to college to study music we did some work where we played with his prepared piano idea. It was a lot of fun.

I am very confused as to why 4'33 was released as a single, though...or even recorded, seeing as you can just...sort of...do your own version at home.

Howard Sounes: Down The Highway. (Bob Dylan)
Rob Trynka: Open Up and Bleed. (Iggy Pop)
Lauren St. John: Hardcore Troubadour. (Steve Earle)

From someone who has read quite a few books about music these biographies spring immediately to mind.
