is it worth spending my argentine pesos? I want to start reading more but my zoomy attention span just shifts to social media while I'm trying to read, I figured this would help. Is it really that much better than just using my phone?

From experience, yes it does help. Put your phone up in another room and only carry the kindle around with you.

you can load them with apps just like you can your phone so it will still require some self discipline. better for eye strain tho

I use one and it's actually better than phone because the screen resembles paper and you can read it in the sun no problem. It does lack soul though.

Ereaders in general are well worth it, but get a kobo or pocketbook or something. Kindles cant read epubs so you’ll constantly have to convert anything you download. The new UI update is horrendous too and removes the option to see your books as a list (the covers HAVE to be visible now)… oh and unless you buy the book through amazon they strip the cover and give you an ugly placeholder for every single book in your library. I'm gonna sell mine and get something else. Amazon really decided a goddamn book needs constant updates.

>> No.20250381

Also buy used if you can, they’re dirt cheap and no worse than the newer models 90% of the time.

Yes.
Also read up on how to use Calibre to convert and organize eBooks.
Maybe set up your own server.

I don’t agree with the people saying get a kobo for one reason: If you have a kindle you can download books from Amazon in mobi/azw3 format. It’s great when you can’t find a book on libgen/zlib. Other than that I agree that ePub is the superior format but converting from mobi/azw3 to ePub or back has never caused the format to change on my ebooks.

aw fuck. I haven't connected my kindle to the internet in over a year- since the first cover stripping update, whenever that was, but I've started thinking about what I'll get when I upgrade... I prefer using calibre so my books are cataloged and sorted, so the epub thing isn't an issue... has the kindle UI really gotten that bad?

Just got one after a year of reading on a smartphone, just because I found myself wanting to read more than I wanted to bother charging my phone.

I don't like it, but I bought a used, older model, so maybe that's why. No paperwhite turned out to be a huge deal for me, and I find myself really missing bits of information my phone app gave me: when exactly I started reading a book and how many hours I spent reading every day, but also better chapter selection layout, better highlighting, colors and note keeping. Not to mention that it's easier to organize your books, tag everything, create neat collections etc.

I'm planning on buying a tablet just for reading instead. To be fair, however, I rarely get distracted by my phone when I read on it, so that isn't an issue.

Yes, and unfortunately for them, there internet is routed through Miami. Argetinians play CS:GO on American servers, unlike Brazilians who play on their own servers. If they were to try to play on Brazilian servers, the ping would be worse because the signal has to go from Argentina to Miami to Brazil and all the way back.

Before spending money on it, just go buy a few actual books and see if reading on something other than your phone actually helps. If you have no problem focusing on physical books consider the ereader, if you still can not focus then ereader may not help you one bit.

>> No.20255627

>>20250375
I agree, really. But you can still see your books as a list, it just also includes their covers on the side now. Also, your sideloaded covers can be restored by Calibre. Load books with calibre, eject kindle, attach kindle to calibre again, eject kindle. When you attach the second time your covers are fixed.

I agree though the kindle UI sucks. In theory getting a different ereader that reads epubs would be slightly simpler too, though I have no experience with them.

And yes, OP, it will help. You will have access to thousands of books, so you can try lots of things without feeling committed to finishing anything you don't like, so you should get to know your own taste better. Also, obviously, you can save a lot of money. It also fits in your pocket. The trick is to just keep it near you all the time so you have the option and it is visible to remind you to read.

>> No.20256762

>>20248913
They're well worth it, though sometimes it's a little sad to not have the physical copy sitting on a shelf reminding you of what you've read.
I bought a last generation Kindle Paperwhite (the one in the OP picture) on discount before they had released a new model and I've been very happy with it. It helps with eye-strain compared to a phone or tablet.

>>20250375
Calibre automatically converts your library when you transfer files.

>>20252113
For my Kindle there was no firmware or copyright protection that I had to circumvent whatsoever. I simply imported my epubs into Calibre, connected the device and told the application to transfer the ebooks.

The biggest problem with these black and white e-readers.

I'm not sure why some people claim that Kindle can't do things like show covers or with certain formats you'll be out of luck. I suppose it can't on its own, but with Calibre they're pretty good e-readers.
I have a Kindle 4 as well as the newest "signature edition" and they both have their perks. If you want something that mimics a book the most and don't care about a light built into the screen I would go with the Kindle 4 or 5. The design of the four and five is extremely comfortable as it has the page turning buttons instead of a touch screen which in combination with having the exposed screen makes it much easier to see under normal lighting. The newest model has its perks but to me it being waterproof is not worth the loss of the buttons and the touch screen is more of a hindrance than anything. Also, now the screen is much harder to see with its light off and you will basically always be using the light unless you are in the brightest of conditions. Reading in the dark is important to me so I normally use the signature edition but for how cheap the four and five are they are excellent models.
(Also, if you buy the newest Kindle make sure to transfer everything through email on calibre. There seems to be some kind of issue with the new OS that can sometimes break your Kindle after transferring things through USB. Email works fine and is probably easier anyway you just have to put the address into the program and it will save it.)
(Another pro tip is if you copy the books codes off of Amazon it will show all the data like it's an Amazon book. Covers and basically everything will look really nice I think some people are just retarded or lazy.)

Why do you guys act like you can only use one? I have the newest Kindle as my main bedtime/dark room reader, the app on my phone in case I end up in a waiting room or something, and then my old Kindle that ends up wherever around the house. One of my favorite features about these things is that it keeps track and updates to wherever you are regardless of what device you're on.
(I'm not sure how it would work adding your own, because I haven't tried it yet, but it actually will sync up and you can switch back and forth between positions in the audiobook and print as well if both are available. Lately, I've been listening to books on my phone a lot and then continuing in text on my Kindle in bed)

older models can be better in some ways. I like the UI and SD card slot of my now broken 2nd gen nook better than the current model I replaced it with. Buying used older models seems to be the best for savings and user experience, unless you absolutely need a backlight (you don't, just turn on a lamp).

My brother gave me one for Christmas because he knew I read a lot. I finish books much faster now and don't have to keep a light on while reading in bed. I like the timer feature that tells you roughly how many minutes you have left in a chapter/book.

That said, I still prefer traditional books for philosophy/non-fiction (that isn't history). So it depends on what you intend to read with it, I guess.
