I don't really find fascism or third positionism all that hard to understand and don't see the need to mystify it. It attempts to crib elements of both capitalism and communism without truly becoming one or the other. So it has elements like social welfare, but also extreme nationalism, and also the support of both the worker and the owner in service to the State. And, for that matter, it attempts to be a kind of atheistic stand-in for God, because the State itself becomes worshipped, and the ruler as the physical embodiment of the State.

There. That's fascism. Easy enough. It took me less than five sentences. I don't see this need by left-wingers to turn fascism into this woo-woo thing.

Most left-wing authors are afraid of talking about fascism as an actual political position with historical reality, because to do so inevitably makes it look like the heretical interpretation of the Marxist political religion it actually is. To avoid making this connection, they talk about fascism in the vaguest way possible and treat it like a spiritual condition people succumb to rather than as a political position they choose to believe in. At this point the waters have been muddied so much that even self-proclaimed fascists see themselves this way.

The pinnacle of this is probably "The Tunnel" by Gass and his whole concept of the "fascism of the heart".

True. The easiest way to understand fascism is to think of the state like a human body. It's about the individual for the collective like a cell for the health of the greater body. That is why it is both anti-capitalist and anti-communist. Capitalism punches on above and makes individuals loyal to only themselves. Communism punches from below and forgets the individual in the name of the collective. Fascists loathe this kind of materialistic tough of war between different parts of the body.
Fascism is anything but atheistic though.
