What are you guys currently or planning on reading?

Going to pace myself from now on, so I’ll be just reading a chapter or two. The chapter I read is Daenerys’s fourth chapter, and by far it’s been the best one from her so far. In the sense we get to learn more about Dothraki and the Dothraki sea worldbuilding. But truth be told, I’m tired of Martin just making them caricature of the Mongols, the city was great since it shows they’re okay with actually building something, instead of being nomadic. Daenerys standing up and hitting Viserys was okay if only I grew tired of Viserys shit at this point. But overall, Daenerys chapters have been hit or miss for me.

I read Guardians of the Flame in high school (around 20 years ago). I decided to re-read this year. First 4 books are good, they are pretty mindless but still fun. Book 5 is meh and Book 6 is absolute garbage. I've just started 7 and it seems to be just as bad as 6, the only saving grace is that it's very short. Anyone else read this series? Are the 'Not' books that come after book 7 any good? I realise there is no conclusion as the author died but I'm already prepared for that.

The original Mistborn trilogy and The Way of Kings were legitimately alright. Sanderson could be a great author if he wanted to, but he's more interested in trying to min-max effort / wealth extraction and secure movie deals. Which are probably contradictory goals now that I think about it. If he wanted to do that he should have spent another few years cranking out quality and then soft pitch a couple of books to NPR and the Times like Gaiman did.

The Manifest Delusions series by Michael R. Fletcher has a sanity-based magic system. Insanity is power, belief shapes reality. The first two books are great. Third one is good until the last chapter, where everything just goes off the rails completely and there's no conceivable way to return to the plot of the original books without pretending the third one never happened.

This, I hate how the only price for having incredible powers is just to be a little bit sad. I hate how self-centered his protagonists are in their suffering, there were tons of others who had shittier situations; unlike Vin, there were skaa girls who had nothing or no one and that were also raped and abused daily for much longer than her; unlike Kaladin, there were veterans who not just lost their men, but also a fucking leg and could never leave slavery. Sanderson stories are truly for teenagers; the characters are just one-dimensional caricatures.

Are there any novels about a guy running an alchemist shop? Just started playing this game called potion craft and it's cosy as heck, frens. It would be neat if there were some comfy novel about a dude just mixing potions, gathering mushrooms and herbs, talking to townsfolk, maybe getting involved in some large conflict by making powerful potions for some heros or villians.
Damn, am I gonna have to write it myself?

I read the first one, apparently they don't get saucy until book 7 or so, which I'll read eventually, but they're not pornographic. In book 1 it's understated. He abducts the daughter of a rival warlord as part of a mission for his home city, and she's very feisty because she's highborn. She expects him to enslave her and she mocks him for not doing it, of course he's from earth so he doesn't believe in that stuff. There's some nice scenes from the tension arising from that, like in one part where she dances for him. Eventually she falls in love with him and becomes his wife.

the plot is really spread out chronologically
reading the book of malazon isn't like reading most other fantasy series because every trilogy (or alternatively sized saga) switches settings and eras by thousands of miles and years
like say the first trilogy in the series is, by analogy, a story about ancient Rome; the next set of books is a story about Manchu dynastry China, and then the next set of books is about Olmecs
that's not literally what's being done but it gives a sense of the POV shifts between series

Just finished this thing, after reading about how much people online seem to hate it
Wasnt half bad, way overhated, Im assuming because the author is right-wing and/or comes off as egotistical in interviews
People kept talking about this book and sexual assault/rapes in it like it took pleasure in going into extended chapter long descriptions of it, taking pleasure of it
Turned out most of those times its just the basic reality that women do get brutalized and abused during and after wars/battles, doesnt shy away from it and doesnt treat it ever like a good thing or go into details about it, unlike other books that like to pretend this shit doesnt happen to women
Sure the main heroine gets assaulted, however both times she fights back on her own without having to have the hero or another man save her
The only time the story actually goes into detail about sexual assault is when the protagonist is tortured and raped, in such a brutal way that his mind and body are broken so far that he becomes a willing and eager slave to the villain and his torturer, doing whatever they want, but even this part of wasnt bad as it served a purpose in the story

>though a lot of the writing is clearly "the author had a thesaurus on-hand"
Yeah, there was a non-insignificant number of words I had to look up. Haven't had to do that in a long time.

There were also some phrases and sequences that stuck out to me as repetitive ("bloody-minded x"), but perhaps that's just because they were unfamiliar to me and therefore caught my attention when I saw them multiple times.

Still, I quite enjoyed the novel. Decent length without feeling overly ponderous, although I suspect some people will disagree with me on this one. I liked the flow of the arcs.

The characterization was done well, in my opinion. It was abundantly clear what the main character's strengths and weaknesses were. I liked the the idea of his character developing from "just doing what he has to to progress because he has no other choice" to really "owning" his actions. However, I feel that the execution of this development at the end of the book was somewhat lacking somehow. I also liked the interlude from Leonis's perspective; it sets up some interesting character conflict for the future.

I look forward to reading the next entry in the series.

My main issue with Bastion was how much of it was just set-up for what SEEMS like it could be a pretty good sequel. I can only hope said sequel is actually good. I actually had some problems with some characterisation (I never really got a handle on Lianshi's personality, and Scorio sort of just felt like he was doing what the plot wanted him to do sometimes) and the pacing was... Really plodding at times. I get it's a slow burn to get you in Scorio's head as he goes through worse and worse shit, but still.

Just finished it. The books are 70-80% build up and 20% payoff, but it's usually pretty good payoff. Erikson spends an inordinate amount of time in characters' heads, meaning you get to know them very personally at the cost of a fucking staggering page count. These books can drag. Erikson also loves being a confusing bastard by dropping wads of lore into your lap and leaving you to untangle it.
Try reading a book or two and see what you think. There's a very real chance you'll get turned away by Erikson's writing style that's fiercely opposed to any handholding or spoonfeeding. Most fans see that as a positive. Personally, I think that if you're going to introduce your readers to a made up world full of made up things with made up names, you should explain what the fuck you're talking about.

The ending was based and I'm glad I read it, but Jesus it was exhausting.

Finished part 2. I'm still pretty ok with the book. There was a bunch more world building, and more characters were introduced. So the story is still growing. That's fine. However, I feel like there are no real climaxes happening. The Way of Kings is a large book, so you expect some small climaxes here and there to keep things interesting. Events that really shift dynamics. Putting characters in new positions. But we don't have any of that yet.
Kaladin makes very small steps in changing his bridgemen position.
Shallan's entire plot is put on the back burner to make room for Dalinar, the high princes, and the king.

Dalinar's plot remains largely the same at the end of the part that it was at the beginning of the part. The difference being is that we understand his position by the end of the plot. But his position never really changed significantly. The characters who are suspicious of him at the beginning, are still suspicious at the end. The characters who thought he was losing it at the beginning, still think he's losing it by the end. A lot of wheels spun, but we didn't actually go anywhere. And while I appreciate the dynamic that's being established, I feel like we haven't gotten anywhere.

Dalinar eventually has a major vision. This vision might be considered a climax because a lot of lore is revealed during a big battle. However, because it's only a vision, the battle is stake-less. There's no real danger of anyone dying, except for these new throwaway characters that were made specifically for the vision.

So basically, I'm all full up on world building now, and I'm awaiting some major arc-falls in part 3. Now, will Sanderson do what he always does, and belabor every plot point, explaining every detail, only inching the plot along at a snails pace, ultimately concluding nothing until the very end of the book? Or will he actually write something exciting. I can't wait to find out.

>> No.20225453

>>20225391
The world building in Way of Kings/Sanderson books feels like you are playing a linear hallway video game. There is no venturing off the path and you can't really look at anything beyond. I'm almost finished reading the lord of the rings again to wash myself of Sanderson. Everything in lord of the rings feels huge. The world building expands beyond the plot and path of the characters. It's massive. In Way of Kings you get a few glimpses of the different cultures through each Bridgeman describing where they come from. But it just doesn't feel the same to me. I really don't understanding the Sanderson world building thing.

The good part of the book is right up at the end. Book 2 is basically just more going nowhere, Shallan gets worse. Kaladin chapters get more sparse. Stakes become less and less because you know you the heroes will be back for the sequel. I did enjoy parts of book 2, but dropped oathbringer. You have been warned.
