What's your stance on goodreads reviews?
And are there better alternatives to look up reviews?

>> No.20210017

Find good people to follow/friend and it becomes infinitely more useful than /lit/.

>> No.20210025

They're good if you're in a hurry and just want vague impressions of how a book has been received by popular audiences and I've cultivated a sphere of reviewers on there who, regardless of my moral, aesthetic, and intellectual judgment of them, I can count on for meaningful reviews and recommendations.

>> No.20210136

I pick my reads based on 1-star reviews.

I only really use it to rate and keep track of books I read.

>> No.20210161

>>20209991
I don't read them. I do look at the ratings tho. High ratings are usually useless, because people will love pure trash- which means that if a book has a low rating, you can be 100% sure it's absolutely unreadable.

The Mote in God's Eye shows 8 and 13 results respectively. Just make sure to expand some reviews.

This. Didn't work well for non fiction so far, but for fiction finding a bunch of women screaming about misogyny or whatever else in reviews earns a quick "To read" click.

I couldn't imagine how much I'd seethe if I'd written some pulpy western or other and some snot-nosed faggot using his "best" vernacular gave some dismissive cunt review because the book didn't mean his gay political biases.

I guess it is sarcasm. I missed that because I didn't think it would be his reviews that are being removed if he's the top reviewer and puts so much effort into them. They wouldn't just remove reviews for low ratings would they?

Useful only for lesser-known books, where the only people who are reading and reviewing it already know the territory. More well-known books get everyone dropping their opinion on it, and it makes for a lot of static.

He could have. My grandmother during her life read about 1 book a day, starting at 10 and ending at 86. That's much more than 10 000, but she did reread a lot of books, so she maybe also read only 10 000 different books.
But since he has only read 41 books since the beginning of the year, he probably is a liar.

I don't normally pay attention to the reviews unless it's completely horrible star ratings overall, also, I disregard reviews left by people with a picture on their Goodreads account. I only really use Goodreads to set book challenges with friends and see how they get on
