If Englishmen, Irishmen, and Scots are different people, how come their philosohpers are pretty much indistinguishable? Whether it's Hobbes, Berkeley, Hume, Adam Smith, Locke, etc, it feels like they have very very similar ideas in the end. Some form of utilitarian pragmatism at the root of it more so than any other nation.

That's not true. The Irish volksgeist is closer to a mix between the Teutonic and Slavic volksgeister. The English are the only ones who are typically aridly pragmatic and utilitarian, and even that is probably due to overexaggeration of certain aspects in the peerage. The Scottish Enlightenment was radically different in character from the simple Calvinist Christianity and pragmatic empiricism of the 17th century British philosophers.

Why do I keep coming back to this website. I tell myself then and again that there's nothing worthwhile on here. I know it for a fact. Yet I come back to this place every day and spend hours here. Hours that could be spent doing literally anything else that is more productive. I know that I'm here forever. I know that I can check out anytime, but I can never leave. I should've listened to the warnings. I never should've come here that fateful day many years ago. I need a fucking lumberjack to cut my internet down. I need to be forcibly removed from these premises and barred from ever returning. My life could've been so much better. I could be a happy boy right now. A cool guy that's successful and gets all the women. Instead I'm a dysgenic troglodyte malformed from nearly two decades of internet usage. I have a metaphorical brain tumor and a shotgun is my scapel.

Do you believe in signs? I never really have, but lately I've been encountering some interesting items which make my pattern-recognizing mind (the same foolish sort which reads stories in the heavens) raise a brow.
You see, the other day I was told what the final exam for my advanced French class would be: I would have to talk about a skill of mine. I had had a similar speech, albeit in English, in my public speaking course years ago. As I had no real talents or skills (And still am without either), I resorted to a more humorous speech. I learned how to solve a Rubik's Cube, and showed it off, mentioning at the end that I had learned it just for the occasion. That idea recurred to my mind, but here I had no Rubik's Cube. And yet mere days later I encountered one left on a bench just on my usual route to my apartment. Leaving it there for whichever thoughtless person had forgotten it was never an option.
And now, over a week later, I've been having trouble making up my mind (Or perhaps simply working up the balls). Should I take a swing and ask out a very attractive girl of Indian descent who's in a few of my classes? I failed to work up the courage to ask her out in my first of two classes with her this week, just earlier today. Afterwards, during my usual Monday trip to the delightful weekly flea market, I encountered an object which held a sort of magnetism over me. One which I, as an Englishman and a lover of Kipling, could never see for sale and leave without. An article with a certain symbolic meaning.
A pith helmet. Made in England, around the time of WWII. I bought it, of course, and consider it 60 euros well-spent. I spent the next two hours wearing it as I continued to browse the flea market and walk around the Old Town.
And now I've concluded that I can no longer shy from my destiny. I must ask the girl out. Whether or not she says yes, I'd regret ignoring this so-called sign for years.

I can't be a chud anymore. Every rightist/third-positionist is a gleaming hypocrite who cares more about "owning the libs" than they do about upholding morality. They hate niggers fucking white women but love "bleaching" and WMAF couples. They hate women being sluts but are still a bunch of dudebros who attribute a man's success and masculinity to how many broads he's fucked which is the kind of behavior that allows sluttery. They hate gays and Jews for being pedophiles but worship pederasty and advocate for lowing the age of consent. They hate consumerism but get assrape baby mad if you suggest any limitations on capitalism which creates consumerism. They LARP as tradcaths and orthodoxs and hindus and jihadis when most of them are probably form protestant America or Britain and have no cultural connection to those denominations. They worship Japan for being "pure" and "honorary Aryans" when Japanese culture is some of the most degenerate there is and the Japs themselves hated whittu piggus in WW2 and killed/raped/tortured every white colonialist they came across. In fact "Aryan" isn't even an European term. It's used to describe fucking Iranians and Pajeets. Why couldn't they make up a more appropriate term or just use something that could fit the mold like "Faustian"? I don't want shitskin concepts in my pure white ideology. They're never gonna do anything as well. They talk about running away or total destruction more than they talk about trying to save their cultures and countries. They suck Xi's dick and beg for the based Chinese (who probably want to kill all whites for their Century of Humiliation) to save them from the nigger horde and talk about how modern China is superior despite being white supremacists themselves. They hate individualism despite individualism being a uniquely western notion. I feel like Derek Vinyard in prison when he realizes that the skinheads in jail with him don't actually care about Nazi ideology. They all do drugs and are gay rapists and just stick together because they're white trash gangbangers. Although I don't have to get raped in the ass to realize how hypocritical and decadent all these retards actually are. I just had to realize I'm not a repressed homosexual. Maybe I'll come back to these politics someday, after these wannabe ubermensch sort out all their contradictions. For now I'm just going to focus on myself.

Sounds like you hate hypocrites and are trying to escape from the zoomer mind prison where everybody is either pure lily white or pure evil, and life is all about finding which "side" is the good one. Every movement is filled with retards and joiners. Be the change you want to see in the world. Visualize the movements and discourses you care about as pyramids, not as homogeneous blobs. Make it your goal to ascend the pyramid and be a beacon and a guide for others that shows them how to ascend as well. There will always be people lower on the pyramid, and there will always be shit tier hangers on at the very bottom. But you can do good work to make things better.

Stop associating with the other confused joiners at the bottom of the barrel, especially the ones who are evidently unlike you in that they actively enjoy being there and following whatever contradictory wind enters their sails that day.

Read this article.
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2019/jul/06/everyones-going-to-the-moon-again-apollo-11-50th-aniversary
The only reason NASA landed on the Moon was politics. Once they have done that, and Soviets couldn't keep up, it wasn't worth it (for politicians) to continue that program and keep spending money.
However, over those fifty years, technology has improved, got cheaper and private companies have emerged. You're now able to do the same mission, for much lower price. In the 60s about 4.5% of the federal budget was going to NASA, now it's only 0.5%. With a much smaller budget, NASA is today able to not only send people to the Moon, but build a first base as well.
And here's a video about Artemis program that I really like.
https://youtu.be/vl6jn-DdafM

Also, there is currently only one working robot on the surface of the Moon, Chinese Yutu-2. NASA hasn't sent one there since the 70s, but in the next few years about ten will be launched.

The ideas come from Ireland and Scotland. Most of what Anglos consider Adam Smith is just wholesale copied from Richard Cantillon for example, Hume is Scottish, Berkeley is Irish, and Hobbes wrote most of his work abroad to have it banned as heresy soon after he returned to England. Anglos need the concepts going on around them explained to them through softer intermediaries they can hate on irrational grounds, which is why the few philosophers they produced who don't spend large amounts of their life in the rest of Europe think genuinely retarded things.

You must learn to detach your ideal from any expectation that it can or will be realized in reality. This doesn't mean becoming a cynic or a fatalist. It means loving the ideal for the ideal's sake, even if times are currently quite bad and it's rare or impossible for that ideal to manifest in contingent reality. When you love the ideal for its own sake you will also radiate secret signs to people and things that could embody that ideal, and that might make the decisive difference for them, if not directly for you.

There's a lot of danger in loving your ideals out of spite or anger. You can become a mindless puritan who forgets what actual love and dedication is, someone who has clearly just turned "being mad about how hard it is to find my ideals in this shit world" into his identity and hobby.

i've been contemplating this too. i went to a very small private school and the transition to large, auditoriums and lectures has been rough. this could also explain why i've done well in the smaller classrooms like history/english/quantitative theory and math, where the teacher/student interaction is better. i'd need a larger sample size but the reality is i need to pick a major and i have the basics in basically every subject but have the worst grades in the classes i find most interesting.

For things to get worse? Of course, our civilization is decaying and we’re in that awkward period of decline where one sees all former institutions (church, family, community) break down while simultaneously witnessing new ones come to replace them (tech platforms, predatory businesses, pod life).
The good news is that one day we’ll both be dead and we won’t have to worry about suffering anymore.

That's Soul. Plato describes Soul in the timaeus as a circle presumably with some other shapes or whatever in it designed by Intellect. It recognizes sameness and differences due to having these proportions within itself. All individual souls were created by the World Soul, which pervades and governs the sensible universe through an expressed principle or logos. All souls can return to Intellect.

I simultaneously want to find friends and isolate myself, and I can't tell how much of the latter is justified - due to how generally retarded most people are - and how much is not justified, and is me being afraid of meeting people. It's not like it's easy to find like-minded people around here either; I'm living in the exurbs still for (technical) college and I'm jealous of my (one and only) friend, who is at a 4-year school and yukking it up with the people there. We barely talk now.

Also, the chances of me getting a girlfriend out here is near zilch, unless I use dating apps and commute to the city, which is unsustainable for any actual relationship and not even worth it to get pussy. I had a fwb with a girl out here for a while and I fucked it up by being an asshole (although that whole thing had been circling the drain for a while I think).

so after three days of continuous tinkering, i finally have a decent workflow for converting book scans into PDFs that are readable on e-ink screens. Pic rell is a picture of an original scan, and the cleaned up version for e-reading
if you take a normal scan of a book and try to read it on an e-reader, it shows up really weird and the background is grey and blotchy. I found a way to isolate just the text and add a plain white background so now, its a plain, sharp, clear black and white page. Its the closest thing to actually owning the book itself in terms of digital reading.
originally I was going to convert them to djvu but all the utilities and tools for djvu manipulation are so outdated that they wont run on a modern system (well, they probably could, but that requires knowledge of the dark arts of UNIX shell scripting that are beyond my grasp). PDF is a pretty universal format and I can compress a whole lot, since its just black and white text + color cover image. I can also set the DPI to be just as sharp as printed text (assuming your e-reader's PPI is high enough to handle it), Also I now easily add (surprisingly accurate) OCR too, so the PDF will be text-searchable.
Im mainly posting this because I'm wondering if there are any other anons interested, I was thinking about doing a write-up of the process

The presumption of comfort and authenticity that is implied by "just bee yourself" has a shred of truth to it, of course it's incomplete and potentially dangerous advice, but almost all philosophies advocate for the preference of personal truth and honesty over performative falsehood.
It is brutally midwit in it's vague and specious promise of cosmic wisdom, that you are a fractal of the universe, that you are touched with the divine. That you have been programmed by 'society' and shit... it's the individualist and midwit assumption that somehow you know better than all the "experts"
But "the answers are within you" expands the implied individualism at the heart of "bee yourself" into something even worse. It's promises solipsism while also denying it: if someone asks you for advice of guidance and is fed back the answer: "you already know what you need to do" or "the answers are within you" it is denying their own truth. They are vulnerability admitting the limits of their knowledge, they are overcoming the ego's need for omniscience. But this statement both feeds back into that egotistical omniscience while also discouraging the individual from seeking help from beyond themselves.

"Free Will" implies choice, but 'difference' is possible in a stochastic universe, but not as a product of choosing by conscious agents.
Another way to think about it is imagine two parallel universes where there only difference is a singular point, be it a proton splitting from an atom or whatever, each universe is then "able to have done differently" but is that free-will, since a proton doesn't have feelings, desires, or will?

I much prefer reading physical books over reading on my phone, but I also refuse to highlight anything or ruin the pages by marking on them. My solution has just been to take pictures of the pages and compile everything into folders but then I have difficulty remembering which passages I specifically liked on the page. Thus I haven’t read a real book in a while and stick with shorter essays and articles

>are actions which are such that the causes of the action were not sufficient to fix that action.
Then there is no Free Will since everything which is actualized the causes must be sufficient. If I choose to kick a soccer ball, then I must be physically close enough to it that if I move my foot with sufficient force it will make contact with the ball. The causes of the action are sufficient to "fix" that action.
By your definition Free Will would be telepathically moving the ball to make up for some insufficency in the causes, be it force, proximity, velocity etc. or perhaps something all together non-physical.

I have become increasingly apathetic towards my day job. It is a salaried position working from home so I often get away with doing minimal work on the daily. I often take naps, read, play video games, or cool during work hours, even during meetings. Part of me feels bad, I know I am making things worse for myself and the company by doing so, but part of me also realizes that if I was supposed to be more productive that someone would have noticed by now, considering I have been like this for over a year. The only feedback I’ve gotten is recently I took on a new very important project, and 2 months in my boss said it was going a bit slow and to pick up the pace if I could. That was 3 months ago, havnt heard anything about my work speed since. I’m not sure if that’s because he’s reserved to firing me once I finish this in June roughly, or because things are fine.

Has anyone been fired here? How bad did it hit you mentally? It’s strange because on the daily I don’t really care for the job and think about quitting all the time, but entertaining the idea I may get fired scares me, feel like it may ruin my life.

Odd feels right now, things would be better if I just worked harder, but I’m not sure I know how to do that at this point, considering my job when performed at its best seems like sending emails at the right time to the right people.

i think I've finally integrated at least a low res view of female psychology. I've known about all the RP theory, PUA , philosophers etc for years but it took the complete infatuation (a serious psychic death) and loss of a women to finally drive the point home and drive out the autism.

Among other things it was the role of fantasy that escaped me for so long. I've always been interested in art/fashion but I never saw it as a means to communicate to people a SPECIFIC message. For me it was always either a pleasure to enjoy as a viewer or a pleasure to create without much care for the signal. I never crafted an 'image' but shifted from symbol to symbol out of an largely unconscious push. When it came to art I loved to focus on techniques and less on the gestalt. This is essentially an autistic way of viewing art because it focuses less on the external affect the piece might have and more on the trying to represent a extremely messy internal message. This is of course more genuine but in a commodified world where so many are attempting to create a specific image out of the symbols they amass it becomes harder to 'win' trying to represent your real internal state. But I'm sure this has always been the case (see the unreasonable man quote)

I tried to express the point that so much of female psychology relies on fantasy. in some sense displaying your individuality and uniqueness can be detrimental since fantasies imply something that is bound to a set of features. I'm reminded of a book on branding I read which tried to make the case that the 'differentiate or die' understanding of marketing is largely incorrect because buyers of popular brands (smaller niche ones are different) have a sort of apathetic view on differentiation as long as there's no significant functional difference between the products they buy. anyway if you are a mix of contradictory symbols you can easily make the fantasy vanish.

the point of this knowledge is that if you conceive of their psychology as mediated through this realm of fantasy (which there are only a few big ones) you can, if you wish, adjust your external presentation in such a way as to attract them to an image of your creation. this requires a certain amount of deception but how it works for most is they just amplify the natural traits they have which fit a certain fantasy women might have.

In the past, the vast majority of Incels were people who were unable to find a partner due to illness or extreme unattractiveness. Today Incels have been joined by two other groups of men. The first are those who are blamed for their own fault. They are usually the result of poor parenting and mental disorders. They are trapped in a negative bias about their chances, fatalists who see little point. They could get a partner, they have options, but they consider them unbalanced if compared to previous generations. They would have to put in more effort to end up with worse results than a few decades ago. Since it is quantitatively as well as morally not easy to make statements about the "quality" of possible partners, the quality of people, these men are often seen as arrogant, entitled or even anti-social. Since these men aren't always ugly or of low status, they are misunderstood and often face benevolent motivation from people who see the general potential in them to get a partner. What they don't understand is that these men want to ensure their own self-preservation in a way, to find a partner of equal (genetic) status. Not only because they think they deserve it, but because further deterioration in their own offspring, would decrease the chances of a connection in the dating world even further. And there we have already arrived at the second new group of today's incels. This is the group of men that today are no longer able to find a partner, although it usually was possible in past generations. In addition to narrowing standards, ethnic imbalances cause this problem as well. An average man from the Phillipines has a height of 5'4" and would be anything but average in Western societies. At the same time, as the pressure increases even in the dating world of the native population of Western countries, these foreign men thus have an even harder time finding a partner. Furthermore, there are discussions about the average facial attractiveness between ethnic groups, which is often a taboo due to its proximity to racist theories. Different cultural, religious, or political systems may have produced different rates of beautiful people in the respective ethnicities.
The worlds dating landscape is changing, but there are of course always a lot of outliers that do not fit into this narrow picture. Those are often used rhetorically in unobjective debates as evidence to dismiss the incel worldview as flawed. The somewhat oversimplified measuring of people as if none of them were conscious individuals also provides surface for rhetorical attacks. Moreover, the Incels social darwinism is also oversimplified; children do not always directly mirror the potential of their parents. Appearance and intelligence can vary heavily from them sometimes, both positively and negatively. But while this variance exists, the general trends are there. Outliers aren't a solution for everyone. These cases do not break out of a framework of what is generally possible.

Pleasantly surprised with this, unless it gives me some weird hangover. 2 pints for 2.50 is just crazy, seems like something you would be nostalgic for -- "hey remember when you could get a steel reserve for 2.50?". It's actually really good ice cold as anons recommended. After I put down the first pint (quickly), I already had a good buzz, and the second pint (which I'm working through now) is less good because now I can taste more of the bitterness as it cools down. Honestly there are plenty of local craft beers which can't hold a candle to this. Price is right, too, of course.
I can't believe it's 2.50. I got half a fucking buzz on. Is this going to be a new thing for me?

Yes but we don't need to entertain that hypothetical because I have objective proof that I don't have free will, because I know I want to fuck certain supermodels. Yet I am not and have not, indeed, I know with absolute certainty that unless some external (i.e. deterministic) factor changes the circumstances that it will remain impossible related to social groups, physical proximity, the kind of clothes I wear, employment opportunities that will affect social opportunities, and even vernacular and memes within the relevant social set that will make courtship easier.
Unless I can fuck the supermodels I want to without some kind of deus ex machina - how can free will be said to exist.
Full Disclosure: I actually don't give a flying fuck about the concept of "free will" or "determinism" whether I die having freely chosen to work as a wagecuck at Walmart rather than at Wendies seems to make the interest in Free Will a moot point. I am only interested in the deterministic vs. free-will argument in as much as there has to be some sort of wriggle room for changing of social class, which I think is the only sort of exercise of free will of sufficient magnitude for me to care. I am not saying that the ultimate purpose of life is to be rich or to be part of the elite, but only that if it is not a possibility then fuck Free Will, you might as well say the universe is deterministic. To put it another way: If I don't have the choice and agency to exercise that choice so I can choose to be rich, or choose to be an ascetic - then I don't have free will. I'm not asking to change history, I'm not asking to affect the lives of millions.

Addendum: to put it another way - I won't accept the existence of 'free will' unless you can give me unambiguous proof of my own agency to change my entire lifestyle, to act within accordance of my goals - not the small minuscule goals of whether I will have orange juice or apple juice to quench my thirst, or whether I will be early to the party. But, something big like ascending social class, or fucking a supermodel of my liking.

>Who has the most nukes in the world?
Russia and US.

Problem is, both they and China have many times more than it is necessary to completely turn the world order on it's head - the existing paradigm cannot survive even a limited exchange, with nuclear powers deploying mere tactical nukes - not in the apocalyptic global homicide sense, but in that the existing power structures will crumble and will be supplanted by new ones, neither of US political parties will survive even a single hostile nuke going off on US soil.

If shit goes south, China, US and Russia as they exist now will be gone, and it doesn't matter at all that China will be more gone. In that way, China definitely has a parity - they can make everyone else lose, same as every other member of the club.

That's not an issue with technological advancement so much as it's a problem with infrastructure. The technology and expertise does exist to allow transactions to continue to go through, but of course it's fiscally prohibitive to implement it.
I've learned that a lot of questions of the "why don't we have flying cars?" or even "why didn't the Ancient Romans have an industrial revolution?" variety can be answered with:

>That’s a big dilemma that you can’t just brush off.
I can and will unless someone can demonstrate how people change their social class (upwardly mobile) through their own volition without the influence of 'luck'. Otherwise it's quite easy to just say "well, they were destined for that anyway".
Other wise there really isn't any sense of free will in the meaningful sense.
A prisoner can choose whether to sleep in this corner or that corner: he's still in a prison. He can't choose to leave. And one needs to avoid any arguments that are analogous to: "he chooses to remain in his prison"
