Any books about why Instagram became the social media platform of choice? Is it as simple as pictures > words? It also feels more hierarchical, somehow, than other platforms since we know certain activities garner more likes and tell us the correct way to live our lives.

Initially it was because of the filters, there's a theory that when you first start a social media network you should incentivize joining even if you don't have any friends on it yet: the filters was one such way of doing that, you don't need to have followers to use those cool filters that made your photos look like a 1950's Kodak slide.
Then unlike Facebook which was ruined the second it allowed you to start linking to news articles, Instagram doesn't allow you to do hotlinks period. Twitter and Facebook on the other hand turned into Digg and Reddit: it's nothing but clickbait links designed to trick boomers. To get people to 'engage' and rage in the comments without actually reading the article linked.
Yes, the visual aspect of Instagram means it's a more natural fit for no hotlinking, but Facebook would be 10x better if they just BTFO all news publications and blogs.
