I was in a similar situation with my twitch channel, I usually streamed myself drawing or some random game while wanting to talk, my viewer numbers were small, but the people who watched talked a lot and felt on a similar wavelength. Suddenly it rose to 3 digit viewers and the quality of the chat kept dropping more and more, which made me stop. It feels hard to stay engaged if you are unable to relate with your viewers, but that's also a sign I'm not made for any entertainment.
