[ERROR] No.2020104 [Reply] [Original]

I've started reading some Japanese Literature lately and am looking for more recommendations.

In the last week or so I have read The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea by Yukio Mishima and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murukami.

I have bought one more novel by each of these authors, Forbidden Colours and After Dark.

I adored both of the novels that I read especially The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Would you recommend me any more by these authors or possibly any other authors? I'd really appreciate it.

Go ahead and finish Mishima and Murakami's back catalogue. Everything is quite good. Read it and make up your own mind.

I wasn't sure about reading all of Murukami's work seeing as many people here say that his work is repetitive.

you can do this before during or after the murakami

they just tend to feature detached male protagonists in their thirties with great tastes in jazz.

That the protagonists are too similar, I could understand as a criticism, but the concepts, places and adventures featured in each are so unique and it's really worth reading them all

A work colleague recommended me Kafka on the Shore which sounded interesting so I'll at least give that a shot, and see if I'll continue from there.

I dislike you, a lot.

Also to keep this related:
I read No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai and it was pretty good, so yeah, get on that I guess.

You couldn't find No Longer Human on Amazon? Wat?

And re: >>2020156, read Abe's The Woman in the Dunes and Oe's Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness collection.

We also have two Japanese literature recommendations charts that you might look into.

I mean that it's only available through the other sellers, not amazon itself. And I don't trust using that seeing as I never got some books I ordered.

Well, you can also try The Setting Sun by the same author. No sure if you're using Amazon.co.uk or what, but its at least on there.

>> No.2020356

The Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Mishima is a fantastic study of an obsessive personality and, to a lesser extent, Buddhism. There's also some damn fine prose in the English translation.
