Al Mutannabi and Al Mu’alaqat as-Sab’ah (the seven hanging odes) are a good start. Very complicated reads in Arabic though.

Seerat bani-hilal is beautiful and there are sources online with the epic sung with subs.

Also jareer and al-farazdaq are interesting to read.
Arabic poetry is notoriously difficult to read especially old poetry. Easier poets are modern ones like Ibrahim touqan, Ahmad shawqi and khaleel Gibran.

If you want a beautiful novel read midaq alley

Arabs don't read. My mother teaches ESL to adult immigrants and she says that many of her Arab students read a novel for the first time in her class. One time she took her class to the university library, and one of the Saudi guys (who had a university degree) said he'd never been in a library before. I've read similar anecdotes elsewhere. It's pretty surprising to me, since Arabic definitely has a literary tradition.

I study in Saudi Arabia and a couple of my Arab friends read, and I also read so that's three.

Are people there made to read anything (besides textbooks, of course) in schools?

I'm looking for contemporary classics (post 40's) that capture the spirit of the modern Arab man, rather than literature from antiquity or the middle ages.

There are some doctors who make you read extra books if you want extra credits, they make you do a synopsis about it and talk about it in class.
