I've only read about ten Discworld books but it seems like every other sentence is either hilarious or poignant. What are our favourite Discworld books? Mine are - Night Watch, Small Gods, Snuff, The Last Hero, Going Postal, Jingo, Mort and The Hogfather.

Feet of Clay and Hogfather. I think that early middle period was his best, when he'd established the world, but hadn't got too preachy yet.

Vimes and Carrot have a fantastic dynamic; one who is a child of destiny who constantly aspires to what's right, lives up to it, and inspires others to do the same... and the other who's a cynical bastard from the lowest background who often checks the former, but sometimes lets himself get inspired.

In the end, Vimes is just a normal dude trying to do the right thing when he knows the world is too nasty for that all the time. And yet, sometimes he does manage to go above and beyond and do something heroic.

My favorite is Reaper Man purely for the ending. Death has to be one of the most based characters in fiction.

The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic are my favourites, unfortunately they are totally different from the rest of the series. Strata is good too, don't know if that counts though.

I dived into Light Fantastic without having read Colour, and I have absolutely no fucking clue what is going on, no idea who these characters are or what they’re doing. They fell off the world, then they’re in smurf house, then they’re driving a meteor. It’s like dream logic. I love it.

I’ve never read any Discworld. Would Guards, Guards! Be a good starting place?

yikes, yeah it's a direct sequel to colour of magic

I started with Guards! Guards! After having it recommended at a bookstore and it is a perfect starting point. It's only the 4th or 5th book published in the series and lays the foundation for a dozen or so subsequent books. It also introduces a wide ensemble of characters and features the city itself as much as any one character.

Mort would also be a good 1st entry. Like >>20187874 said, Death is based.

Thanks it seems pretty interesting I’ll check out Mort too.
