What is your favorite Hermann Hesse novel?

Liked him when I was a naive youth. Not sure if I’d reread him now

why?

I’m the opposite. Hated him as a teenager and found him cringey. Reread him at 30 and found him extremely inspirational. At first I was embarrassed but I realized I would rather be inspired by Hesse as a late bloomer than not. If he was still alive today I’d give him firm handshake and thank him

i liked both the Steppenwolf and Siddhartha, but his language was pretty grating at times, probably that was just because it seemed so "Hippie", which is of course because those fucks loved him and probably adopted much of his style.
all in all though, through the work i've read by him, he probably was a very kind and humble man

"Beneath the wheel". Stoner for teens basically. Hit right in the feelz.

I don’t dislike his work, but they feel like vehicles for timeless wisdom taken from spiritual texts and reworked into Siddhartha for example

I like that about his work. I feel like he works ancient spirituality and wisdom into a modern existentialist framework.

I would agree with you. I think I’m just sick of anything associated with New Age or Hippies after my university experience

I am as well. They pretty much destroyed most spiritual and religious movements that originally sprung up or were revived during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Unfortunately, I share a lot of literary interests with them (Hermann Hesse, Robert Graves, etc.)

The one where he's not a permavirgin.

Oh wait, he never wrote that.

>> No.20178684

Someone please tell me he's not the role model of those cringy people who say they're not religious but they're spiritual because they're too pussy to say they're atheist or because they don't think it's cool enough, an say they live by some eastern religion because they want to be different and quirky and because of fucking orientalism

Beneath the Wheel, Demian, or Siddhartha. Can't decide between the three, but will probably default to BtW. Hesse's novels made me almost-gay, but the brotherhood of the lads in most of his books is too balanced between yin and yang, whereas all gays I've ever met IRL are giant fucking faggots affecting feminine airs, and I don't want that, so I'll continue not having sex with anyone, male of female. Thanks, Hermann!

By the moment Steppenwolf, surely it felt like being thrown a cold water bucket.
It surprised me, I was expecting worse.
