His works were showcased in exhibitions during his lifetime and one of those exhibitions was even attended by the president of France. Add to that the appreciation and acknowledgement he had from other artists and critics I wouldn't call him a failure.

In the age of capitalism, commercial success is all that matters. Money is tangible and provides a living. Ask anyone on the street who knows Van Gogh if he was successful or a failure during his lifetime. Everyone tells me he was a failure including himself, except you
