If I could read only one novel by him, which one would it be?

His Collected Stories. But for pure novel, pick any of his big ones. They are all great for their own reasons but none come close to his short stories

His short stories, in my opinion, are where he shines best.
Short Stories
>Hills Like White Elephants
>The Short Happy Life of Francis McComber
>Indian Camp
>A Very Short Story
>The Snows of Kilimanjaro
>A Clean, Well Lighted Place

As for a novel, I would probably say The Sun Also Rises. A Moveable Feast is amazing too, but it's more memoir than novel.

Old Man and the Sea. But read it in French. Hemingway is awful in English.

A Farewell to Arms. It's his most autobiographical, and the most autobiographical novels are usually the best ones

sun is his best. old man is a novella.

if it's a novel it should be farewell to arms. old man and the sea should only be read after you have completed the rest of papa's bibliography
