Reading the short story "A painful case" by Joyce has traumatized me and i haven't been able to read anything else for two weeks since i finished it.

A solitary dude makes a friend with a woman who's married to a sea captain that's often away so she's prolly lonely too. The guy thinks they're just friends but one day she puts his hand on her cheek which he thinks means she wants to do the sex, so he tells her to fak off because it would be improper (iirc). After a while he reads in the paper she died, probably by her own hand, after becoming a bit of a lush. He realizes maybe it was his fault and gets real sad about it. And he also realizes he's super lonely and probably shouldn't have stopped seeing her. I should mention he's a real type A personality, kind of a control freak, so he probably got freaked out by her catching feelings and he wasn't sure how to deal with it. I think the point of the story is he's so concerned with being a stand up dude it prevents him from being an actual human being and getting into some shit that might hurt or conversely, let him feel truly alive, but i'm a pseud

Should the call the cops on people like that. Leash laws exist, and if they flaunt leash laws, they probably haven't even registered their dog with their town of residence, which is another crime! Unregistered dog not on a leash, that bad boy is going to the pound until the owners can sort their shit out.

I think an added element is the lady's husband wrote the obituary and said that it was concluded that it was nobody's fault. So he may just be projecting the whole thing. Either way the main character is a buster
