use the memrise card decks made for each specific level of the JLPT. Lowest is level five, start with that.

(but obviously you need to memorize katakana and hiragana first, use those decks if you haven't gotten them down yet. handwriting helps too)

Learn both syllabaries, start learning kanji, look up grammar you don't know or follow a textbook (Minna no Nihongo is shit, avoid it), immersion is very good but actually studying grammar and kanji is essential. It's hard but don't get discouraged. You won't be able to read literature until much later, but manga is doable, so if you're into it you'll start to see results soon.

If English is your first language, learn German. It's not only the easiest, but you can read Goethe, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Hitler, Holderlin, Rilke, Schiller, Burckhardt, Ranke, Hesse, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, etc.
Also a shit ton of history, sociology and anthropology books that aren't translated into English.
French is a very good alternate, but it is way harder if English is your first language.

Use a textbook (I unironically suggests Genki) and supplement it with as much reading and speaking practice as possible.

Also pic related is an incredibly useful supplementary resource; it was expensive when I bought it but I think it paid dividends desu.
