I liked it a lot when I was 16, it was one of the first "literary" books I'd read outside of school.

I haven't read house of leaves but I wonder if its inspired by House of Asterion by Borges.

The house itself is but the house is only like 1/3rd of the book

Well, the whole twist of House of Asterion is that he was the minotaur.

Honestly I might actually read House of Leaves. It looked too art-lit for my tastes

Unfortunately it isn't, though when you read it you will wish it was. I believe if Danielewski had actually read Borges, he could have written a decent book. As it is, it is mostly mediocre with a few moments of greatness and a few of cringe.
He is able to cover this up by making one of the narrators "crazy" and disguising it in all the gimmick but the whole thing is pretty inconsistent.
It's a super fast read though, so imo worth it for the few moments of genius.

>>20137889
Incorrect. You are his dad. There was an interview where Danielewski admitted this book is all about the death of his father that occurred a few years before. I don't think you can really get that from the text as he doesn't actually connect a lot of his allusions and references (and he's not that deep..) but if you are trying to infer any symbolism that isn't in the text itself, it is his dad.

It was alright? Overall it feels dated, you can find much better and original books with metanarratives today compared to when this was published. Your enjoyment of the book is entirely dependent on which rabbit holes you want to explore within it. For me the Navidson Record was incredibly capitating yet any time Truant popped in I lost interest. Still, I enjoyed my time with it. 5/7 worm rating.

I’m not sure you know what this term means. Also, give examples of books that do it better

It's the best thoroughly-Reddit book you'll ever read, it's about a 6/10, approaches 7 in the really good meaty parts, approaches 4 in the Johnny Truant and Reddit postmodern pseud wankery

The Navidson parts were pretty good. Every time I read the Truant parts I just keep thinking about the author's self-inserts and how ridiculous the character was.
