He'll find a signpost at a three-pronged fork in the road, one way to optimism (the absolute), flat ground, one way to pessimism, downhill, and one way to the cold truth which leads up a steep, winding path to a craggy snowcapped mountain, which is the rejection of all optimism and pessimism as truths, and that it's all on him whether he wants to climb that path.
