You know, now that Miura had been dead it has given us time to ponder.
It really is a bit overrated and it’s only as highly praised because expectations for manga are laughably low.
It’s flaws have become all too obvious, it loses direction after the Golden Age arc, it becomes edgy for the sake of being edgy, Silat’s subplot goes nowhere, Guts’ companions are annoying or useless, and the schedule slipping becomes unbearable.
Let’s not forget that they were on that boat for SEVEN FUCKING YEARS of real life time.
It’s impossible not to feel a little bit resentful and disappointed, if only Miura hadn’t taken so many hiatuses to play Idolmaster he might have been able to finish Berserk before he died, especially because so many (jokingly) predicted this exact thing was gonna happen.
It doesn’t matter how Berserk ends after his editors take over, his death will always cast a shadow over the finished product.

The Black Combany from Glenn Cook endeared itself to me during the two books I've read it.
I also liked the Felix & Gotrek books from William King. Not sure about the later incarnations though. The titular hero also became a franchise mascot, which pretty much guarantees his story never gets a proper conclusion either

Vinland Saga's first two arcs is probably the closest understanding from a manga author I've seen (so far) of how people of that time period viewed reality (around the year 1000). Not on the subject of Christianity specifically around that time period, the author didn't seem to know much about that in detail. But on the way a few important characters saw themselves and others firmly embedded within a specific story or a mythological history much bigger and older than themselves, and acted it out

My favorite fantasy world in western fantasy is a children's book series, the Edge Chronicles. It has death, dangerous and mysterious environments, and individuals left ruined or crippled by the many dangers of its world. But it still keeps a certain sense of levity and deep curiosity of the unknown within the characters that I've found missing in what I've read of fantasy worlds depicted in adult fantasy novels. Simply haven't come across a world I've liked as much as Edge Chronicles in any other fantasy series so far in books aimed towards adult audiences. And it doesn't rob too much from Tolkein compared to others

Have to disagree with comments like "Beserk is just any manga," and "only Golden Age is good."

Beserk shares many of the weaknesses of graphic novels and manga, namely that exposition and dialogue take up a lot of space and so can be lacking.

The exposition in Beserk is actually some of the best parts, but only certain types. Where it works is in lore and history dumps. The explanation of the history of the Tower of Rebirth is good, or the opening of Lost Children. The info dump on the astral world in Millennium Falcon is one of the best, really fleshing out the world of Beserk as three layers, the Platonic world of ideas/Logos, the world of actuality, and the world of modal possibility, the astral plane where Gods and demons exist, as well as ledgends. These interact with the physical world of the actual only so much as people believe in them, but have a solid hold on man kinds' unconscious / collective unconscious / archetypes. This is so similar to Bakker's Outside (although Beserk obviously has a lot of influence from Japanese myth too) in The Darkness That Comes Before, and the aesthetics are so similar that I have to imagine Bakker read Beserk.

But the exposition is weak when it has to rely on tons of dialogue. The political plots within Midland and military strategy elements sometimes didn't hit right.

Overall, I'd say Golden Age just lasts a little too long. The climax is so shocking because supernatural elements have been on the fringe for so long, but the endless battles start to blend in it.

It does give time for Guts to slowly age in the art over thousands of pages though and for the Band of the Hawk to feel like family, so maybe it does all pay off.

Lost Children to mid-Conviction is my favorite. Now the supernatural dominates. The problem is that it is so unrelentingly dark that it can't maintain the mood.

Millennium Falcon goes too far in the other direction though. Comic relief starts to shit up some parts and the whole troll section just felt contrived to have an encounter where they find Slaan. That said, it picks up from there and the plotline of Griffith reforming the Band of the Hawk to push back the Kishan Empire is good.

At its best, Beserk is really far above other manga. I've read a bunch because I liked Beserk so much, and most is either bad or just meh. Sort of like fantasy.

Obviously you lose realism has the story goes on and Guts becomes more like a demigod, but I think this works ok with the lore. His will is able to influence reality because he is now part of the Astral World due to the Brand and the Law of Causality working on him.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is the only other manga I thought was as good.

But if you liked Beserk, do yourself a favor and read Bakker. Just be aware that it starts a bit slow and has almost a bit too many plot lines to start. They all converge though and by the second book it is rolling hard.

Anime and manga completely lost any and all appeal as soon as I entered college. I don't know how any grown man can stomach it. Berserk and all that other nonsense just come off very juvenile when I can get good stories with good dialogue and good characters in books and films. I honestly tried very hard to get back into it with old favorites like Ashita no Joe and LotGH but there's that voice in the back of my head telling me I'm wasting precious time of my life on shit I no longer care about and shouldn't force myself to care about. I usually just get my animation fix from rewatching Yuri Norstein and Wallace and Gromit shorts.
