In barthelemeus baloon, i really didnt care for the meta element. The story was so engaging and creative on a surface level, which was even acknowledged by the kids bouncing on the “complex surface of the baloon” but it didnt add anything that it was acknowledged. Last paragraph was beautiful. Lost in the funhouse i disliked. The meta was cheap and too in your face. I rolled my eyes through the second half.

With nabokov its different. Its not just a mirror pointed at a mirror to create the illusion of depth but he plays a part in the cosmology of the book by inserting himself as a demiurge character so it adds to the story. Unless youre in the business of imposing statements about the external world to the use of that device
