What sets good fantasy apart from bad fantasy?

This was fucking terrible. Dropped it 200 pages in when they go into some other world inside the sea and then to some Blake like painting world. Hated the constant jumping around too. And the MC is a fucking annoying piece of shit

All well written literature is a good fantasy. The sub-genre of elves, orcs and knights is quixotic autism.

Rules and relevance. Lewis and Tolkein were top scholars who studied storytelling in multiple languages before writing. Howard wasn't a formal scholar but was an autodidact and read extensively about the ancient world. Clark Ashton Smith was a top rated poet and taught himself French to be able to read Baudelaire.
The other guys are hacks who just did what they always do for an hour at the typewriter and called it a day.
