It is not at all the point. Fairly certain there is a bit going over how he learned to speak when young but ceased speaking and debates speaking when he goes to visit Antonapolous and discovers he was moved, but he does not out of fear because he is not sure he remembers how.

Just because you walk around with your fingers in your ears does not mean you are deaf. Even if he was a literal deaf mute in the novel that still does not make it "the whole fucking point" or even "like the whole fucking point," it is a plot device and the book could remain thematically the same even if Singer could hear and did speak. Making him deaf and having him not speak simplifies things greatly, a good number of questions do not need to be answered and she was able to get away with very little character development on Singer and keep things more focused on theme.

If memory serves the fact that Singer could speak but chose not too was used to provide a fairly important bit of information regarding the relationship between him and Antonapolous and the importance of it to him which ultimately leads you to tragic irony of the book, despite all of his differences he was no different than the characters who came to him. Might be time to give this a reread.

You are right in the sense I think lonely people are attracted to her work, and there tends to be a reason a person finds themselves lonely i.e they are weird or schizo. I wouldn't say that's a problem though; given the culture of the board I would think it were a plus for many anons.
