How can I not be conscious if I want to be conscious and I choose every day to look at something that was not shown to me by the nature of the thing itself.

For example, I am in a room full of people, and I concentrate my eyes on the way a certain person is clasping one hand around her other wrist, and also I am observant of the stack of wood in a bucket in the corner of the room behind me. These things are not useful to any simulation, they are meaningless to the process of the simulation, and also, observing them is not meaningful to the process of my life, and cannot have any particular outcome. Nonetheless I observe them, and choose to remember them. I choose to be conscious of them. That I can pick and choose elements of what I observe as things that I will be conscious of betrays an element of consciousness that is more than what would be expected of a utilitarian machine operating in a simulation.
