It's more likely that it happened than that it didn't. Sanderson is just an incredibly prudish author and writing the reunion between Rand and Aviendha was he could manage before risking Mormon Penance, so he didn't write anything more obvious.

My question was more about whether he'd put out anything readable recently. I greatly enjoyed Elantris and the first two Stormlights, but the rest of his works have been decent (Mistborn 1) to middling (everything else) to God-awful (Oathbreaker). I've heard good things about Wax and Wayne, but I didn't find the ending of the Mistborn trilogy very good, so I've not taken it upon myself to continue.
I had seen his kickstarter, but it was a while ago. Good for him, I guess. His publisher is probably seething. Why the hell this is happening is completely unfathomable to me though. It's like saying that my little corner pizzeria is suddenly hugely in demand all over the entire country. I guess Sandy's much more popular than I thought, but after Oathbreaker I really can't understand why that would be.
I feel like a boomer, fellow anons. I just don't get it.

The thing preventing all that religion from falling to chaos is the marine chapters, and they do NOT worship the emporer, they all KNOW he is not a god, they all KNOW he decreed worship be banned. They /revere/ him, but for the FACT of his deeds and vision, not some fluffy faith based hooey.

Finished Gideon the Ninth today. A story about a cringey, meme-spouting lesbian written by a cringey, meme-spouting lesbian and I loved it. Tamsyn's style really worked well for Gideon's antics and she was quite entertaining. The characters were well-done and distinct from each other and weren't overly quippy like I feared they would be. Some things in the story made no sense in a way that was clearly on purpose to fit the weird setting and some other things in the story made no sense in the author-fucked-up kind of way but overall I felt the mystery was well done. The ending made me a little sad even though I acknowledge it's idiotic to mourn a character's death in a story about necromancy and that made me realize how much I had been rooting for Gideon by the end. It was nice.

I'll probably get around to the sequel sooner rather than later. It seems really weird from what I've heard and the fact that it's written at least partly in the second person intrigues me.

Stormlight 1 is insanely good, might be up there as one of the most interesting books I've ever read. 2 is great but not as good as the first one; 3 was a pointless mess that I barely survived, which wastes good characters (and might even assassinate one) whilst doing nothing at all to compensate; and I was asking about 4, which anon suggests is generally readable but I'm still hesitant about. Note that it's supposed to be a 10-volume series, with each one being a massive brick. I like massive bricks, but after book 3 (which made having read Warbreaker mostly necessary), I wouldn't bet on the entire thing ending up decent.
Mistborn was decent and started off very well, but I really didn't like the ending of the trilogy.
I'd vote Stormlight if it wasn't unfinished. For now... read Elantris.

It's not as riveting as it sounds. I like Sanderson but found the majority of RoW to be a slog. It was so lacking in tension or plot twists or original ideas. Fair enough, I would say though, and I am not that anon but as someone who has also read both, that although Bakker gets really dark he doesn't have a tendency to dwell on things as long as Erikson does. Bakker will mention some horrible, evil, act but almost in passing. Often it is no more than a line or two. There is a stylistic sense of mute distance in much of his prose, where as Erikson can be more, idk, "pornographic" about it at times.

A lot of Scifi is autistic men writing about autistic men doing autistic things. And as of recently, LGBTQI BIPOC women writing about LGBTQI BIPOC women so that other LGBTQI BIPOC women can feel "seen" or whatever, but otherwise not doing much of anything.

Fantasy deals more with deeply ingrained mythic tropes, its primarily psychological in the sense that worlds are sort externalizations of the way people innately order the world subjectively. This is the "comfy" factor.

A big part of Bakker's work is the incredible evil wrought by the most unconcerned observer of all.

Besides I just simply disagree with your assessment. The evil is in the acts, the justifications, and the cumulative effect of them piling up. Bakker doesn't have to belabour the point because he is a better writer than Erikson. And if you had read any of his work you would know there is know 'merrily passing it' lol.

I know it sounds weird, but the way Bakker presents his atrocities is what does it. Steve kinda dwells on each for a while, so that you kinda get overexposed. Like "Oh boy, another Felisin gets raped chapter". As if he needs to remind the reader that rape is bad every single time it happens. Bakker does a similar thing with Esmi, but most of his fucked up stuff is mentioned in an almost off hand way that makes you wonder why everyone (author and characters) treats it so casually. It kinda puts you in the mindset of "Well, if nobody seems particularly bothered by any of this shit, what happens that we don't see?" And as the other guy mentioned, the way certain characters do absolutely atrocious stuff with exactly 0 moral qualms, and then just move on with their day, just compounds each atrocity. In terms of actual "stuff" that happens, Steve has more, but the impact of each is lessened by him spending half a book on why each atrocity is bad, as if the reader is a bit too slow to really get it.

For 3, I didn't mean the siege section, I meant what Itkovian does for the Imass. Dying to take the grief of thousands of genocidal maniacs, just because he knows they also deserve absolution, even after the shit he went through, really just struck me as one of the most completely selfless and noble things anyone in the whole series does. All Itkovian really wants is to help people, and that's a sentiment that shows up very rarely.

>Beneath the monstrosity’s claws, Valrissa went very still, like a calf caught in the jaws of a wolf. Her terrified eyes turned from Aëngelas, and rolled upwards beneath their lids, as though trying to peer at the figure behind her.
>“Valrissa!” Aëngelas screamed. “Valrissssaa!”
>Holding her by the throat, the thing languorously picked her clothing away, like the skin of a rotten peach. As her breasts fell free, round-white with soft-pink nipples, a sheet of sunlight flickered across the horizon, and illuminated her lithe curves … But the hunger that held her from behind remained shadowy - like glistening smoke.
>Animal violence overcame Aëngelas, and he strained at his leash, gagged inarticulate fury.
>And a husky voice in his soul said: We are a race of lovers, manling …
>“Beaaassee!” Aëngelas wept. “I don’t knoooowww …”
>The thing’s free hand traced a thread of blood between her bosom across the plane of her shuddering belly. Valrissa’s eyes returned to Aëngelas, thick with something impossible. She moaned and parted her hanging legs to greet the abomination’s hand.
>A race of lovers …
>“I don’t know! I don’t! I don’t! Beaase stop! Beaasse!”
>The thing screeched like a thousand falcons as it plunged into her. Glass thunder. Shivering sky. She bent back her head, her face contorted in pain and bliss. She convulsed and groaned, arched to meet the creature’s thrusts.
>And when she climaxed, Aëngelas crumpled, grasped his head between his hands, beat his face against the turf.
>The cold felt good against his broken lips.
>With an inhuman, dragon gasp, the thing pressed its bruised phallus up across her stomach and washed her sunlit breasts with pungent, black seed.
>Another thunderous screech, woven by the thin human wail of a woman.
>And again it asked the question.
>I don’t know …
>These things make you weak, it said, tossing her like a sack to cold grasses. With a look, it gave her to the Sranc—to their licentious fury. Once again, it asked the question.
>The abomination then gave his weeping son - sweet, innocent Bengulla - to the Sranc, and once again asked the question.
>I don’t know what you mean …
>And when the Sranc made a womb of Aëngelas himself, it asked - with each raper’s thrust, it asked …
>Until the gagging shrieks of his wife and child became the question. Until
his own deranged howls became the question …
>His wife and child were dead. Sacks of penetrated flesh with faces that he
loved, and still … they did things.
>Always, the same mad, incomprehensible question.

What kind of idiot judges a writer but a single paragraph? Nobody writes brilliantly all the time, every artist has moments of greatness and slump, complexity and crude pornography. Not everyone is a tryhard like Nabokov with an agenda to exhaust their reader as quickly as possible. Genre writers are affected more than anyone, perhaps, since their stories span thousands of pages.

>They gathered upon the inner rim of the Occlusion, the Sons of the Race of Men. Humanity, whose lives wilted so soon after budding, whose generations passed as storms and gentle rains. Ephemeral, yet fertile, and so forever new, casting nations like mantles, as ignorant of their origin as they were terrified of their demise. Humanity had arrived in all its turbulent,
amnesiac might, come to obliterate Golgotterath. Thunyeri dwarfing Shigeki, their skin jaundiced for being so fair. Galeoth cowing Scarlet Schoolmen for the violence of their demonstration. Nansur Columnaries standing immobile, deaf to any officer’s cry. Ainoni caste-nobles pawing white upon their cheeks. Thousands upon thousands gazing, witless for incredulity, paralytic for shame and horror, alien gold pricking their eyes …
>Men, the cracked vessel from which the Gods drank most deep.
>Some had been petty unto murder in their past lives, knifing brothers for the merest slight, while others had been generous unto folly, abiding faithless wives, starving to carry witless parents. It did not matter. Gluttons and ascetics, cowards and champions, reavers and healers, adulterers and celibates—they had been all of these things ere they had taken up their Holy Aspect-Emperor’s Great Ordeal. And for all their numberless differences, they need only look to fathom one another, to know whether they would be greeted or ignored or attacked. To be a Man is to understand and be understood as a Man, to blindly honour expectation so that others might gamble accordingly. For it was the way they repeated one another that made them Sons of Men. >Despite their numberless feuds and grudges—for all their divisions—they stood as one before the heinous image.
>The Great Ordeal … nay …
>Humanity, horrid and beatific, frail and astounding, come to collect their future from wicked debtors.
>One race, come to fathom the Ark with sword and fire, and to at long last exterminate the Unholy Consult.

2. the emperor's soul (closely ties for his best work yet, also a short novella)
3. warbreaker (sets the tone for most of his later works, has an intriguing character)
4. aether of the night (unreleased, you can easily find it online, much better than some of his later works imho)
5. elantris (set in the same world as the emperor's soul)
6. mistborn era 1 but only so you can read mistborn era 2 which is his strongest block of series
7.stormlight archives 1&2
8. stormlight archives 3&4, only advised for the most ardent, his pace and writing never his strongest in almost all his works drags down both the books

I would sure to live in a perfect world where the likes of Bakker are middling grinders of pulpy airport novels, but the world we live in is the one where fantasy charts are topped by the likes of Rothfuss and Jemisin and their wholesome antiracist lgbt adventures, so insulting authors that try to maintain a modicum of literary integrity seems stupid.

Yeah but there's no hand holding. You get dropped in the middle of an ongoing story without any of the usual exposition. Characters will reference people, places, and events that you have no way of knowing about, and they don't bother to explain in detail what they're referring to, so you just have to remember these names and hope for more details later. You also don't get a lot of background information on most of the characters when you meet them, and you have to gradually collect details about them throughout the story as they become relevant to the plot. There's also a lot of characters, and you don't stop meting new characters until book 7. So a lot of people get exasperated reading the series. You have to be very comfortable with jumping around between a lot of characters and places, with not really understanding the larger context for the story for several books, and not having easy exposition to explain everything for you.

Obviously there is no hard evidence for it, but the circumstantial evidence seems compelling to me. Roose is noted to be seemingly ageless. Attention is always drawn to his almost otherworldly eyes. His house is known for the practice of flaying and we as readers additionally know that in the world of Westeros it's possible to wear another human's skin as a disguise as demonstrated by the Faceless Men. Roose allowing Ramsay to live despite Ramsay being extremely troublesome for him is most suspicious unless he has some important use for him or rather for his skin later down the line. Ramsay is certainly not needed as his heir, since he fully expects Fat Wanda to birth him new children. House Bolton is also curiously small, which goes well with its primary purpose being to host Roose throughout the ages.

>> No.20102330

Not him, but aren't all northern houses small compared to the South? Like House Stark is just Ned and his children with his little brother being the only other Stark.

>> No.20102340

The Northern houses do seem to be small, but even the Starks have a cadet branch in the Karstarks. Need had a brother and fathered multiple children himself. But for House Bolton, Roose is the only member of prominence aside from whoever is Roose's heir apparent at the time. Again it's just a hunch, but given all the other bits and pieces, his house seems suspiciously Roose-centric compared to every other noble house in the story.

Diversify your posts at the very least, guy. Maybe add some blurbs or bullshit from the books. There's enough mythological allegory from Ren Zhu to fill a few. It's about all the book has to offer.

Made a vow to complete any book I pick up this year because I don't think I give enough a fair try. 200 chapters of this fucking mess and it has almost no redeemable qualities other than the Ren Zhu chapter setups. Fang Yuan is a Gary Stu, even considering he's reliving his own life and exploiting his memories in the situation. The 'butterfly effect' changes history in his favor, facilitating his success more than once to provide him the most powerful Gu (progression bugs) in the region.

The only other part of Book One worth mentioning is the Divine Investigator, who does touch upon some interesting occurrences in the book that the reader wouldn't have thought of at first glance. All to determine who killed the son of a famous merchant caravan. Unfortunately this plot is quickly abandoned as we need to end the novel in the next 10 chapters, so most of the characters involved are killed to make sure our NEFARIOUS BAD GUY MC can win.

4/10, won't bother with Book Two. Those of you who can read all 2,4000+ chapters and still wax on about it deserve some applause. That or you're drumming up artificial hits to his Royal Road to make China remove the ban on it.

That's not an acceptable excuse for providing your MC the entire world in the very first book. If it's integral to the main plot then it sounds like further padding for the MC, who already has the benefit of 600 years of life to fall back on. It'd be one thing if the MC was earning these victories through his knowledge of the past. I did really enjoy the approach to finding the Liquor Worm at first. By the end of it, the entire world seemed to exist to convenience him... because it does.

Feel free to explain why and how the butterfly effect comes into play. I've got no interest in reading further but at least it'll provide me a laugh on how off the rails this story inevitably gets.
