A Song of Ice and Fire is Dorothy Dunnett fan fiction, which is why he gets so butthurt about fan fiction himself. He originally wanted to write a historical novelization of the War of the Roses, then realized he wasn't skilled enough to tell the story without butchering the history, so he said fuck it, put on the Grateful Dead and vomited onto the page.

I'd grade him a B or a C overrall. I like his works, some range from really good to just being okay but I find his books have a good amount of re-read value due to how well he uses foreshadowing especially in Ice and Fire.

This is a quite good point. Most fantasy novels leave vague impressions that dissipate after a while, and i end up only being able to highlight how a few abstract things about them were good.
