It should come as no surprise to anyone that she was a completely hopeless drug addict and spiritual slave who popped dexedrine and barbiturates every single day for 30 years.

I liked Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, and We the Living but Anthem was just her trying to be Zamyatin. Fairly sure she was ripping off We in that book otherwise she's okay, and not as terrible as people make her out to be

the characters are one dimensional with few exceptions, she has no subtlety when inserting her "philosophy" in her fiction, she rambles and everything is written too long
take atlas shrugged for example, there is a good novel somewhere in there but you to excavate it you would need to remove at the droning and preaching, all the plot points which are there for no overarching reason and all the retarded stuff in which the characters simply state their intentions word for word

No. Not sure why she is hated so much. Yes, her books don't need to be as long as they are but they're alright. I wouldn't consider her to be on the same level as George Orwell, but she's up there and she's worth the read if you have the time.

Only 5 people, and about 3 or 4 women (female), have actually read Atlus Shrugged and we only liked it for train and sex and an epic about living in the 2010s. And trains and sex.

Her writing isn't bad; by any standard its quite good. She proliferates her philosophy by writing novels featuring it. People say her ideals are hamfisted in her novels; they are right only if they assume she tries to write from a relatively neutral stance. She does not, she writes fiction politically. Rand did such a good job of this in her lifetime that she basically created a cult. When you see people calling Rand a bad writer on the internet, you're mostly seeing a reaction to her fans and her ideology, not her writing itself.

She repeats her points all the time and she's too verbose. The structure is sometimes weird in the fountainhead. She uses too many words to say something. The fountainhead and atlas shrugged are almost the same book. Just read the speeches of her characters if you want to know what she is about, the rest is useless.

>> No.20013174

She is basically describing daily lifes of these characters.Oh I agree it could be a bit shorter but overall message and the characters are all realistic exept howard maybe but that is considered her ideal and poeple like him do exist they are just rare and not 100 percent him but lets say 90.All these characters show different approaches to life and its also realistic to see how they interact.

I liked Anthem, as short as it was. She's very political so don't expect to see both sides of an argument depicted in the same light, but for all her exaggerations and propensities, she is more often than not right on the money. Her philosophy isn't perfect, but has some very strong points

I've read, in order, Atlas Shrugged, Anthem(audiobook), and Fountainhead. She's an amazing writer and her views are fairly cut to the chase. She's not perfect, those very views change across the years, but even Einstein wasn't perfectly consistent. And just like Einstein her biggest mistake was not going All The Way with her own principles. She would talk of reason and Aristotle, but wouldn't develop much deductive reasoning to expansively answer the big paradoxes of philosophy. She would recommend the pursuit of pleasure and happiness in her books, but would show herself publicly as a neutral faced stoic, even sometimes cricizing the "hedonists" of her time when they were a bit different than she expected.

No one pays attention but John Rogers always gets the last word:
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

I enjoyed her essays in The Romantic Manifesto, but the irony of her death in public housing makes her an absolute hypocrite and almost erases any intellectual merit her writing has except as a period study.

Atlas Shrugged is very excessive and suffers from Rand really indulging in her ideological revenge fantasies, but The Fountainhead and We the Living are great novels and are excellent works of characterization. She had a very rare talent for structure; despite their size, none of her novels seemed disjointed or rambling, everything felt like it served a bigger purpose in the novel.
