Going on a road trip. Recommend some good audio books.

To be clear: I don't want just good novels, read on-tape. I want audio books that are particularly well made. Pic related; this is a mediocre novel, but an exceptionally good audio book.

>audio books

I did end up listening once to David Carradine reading On The Road. Utter bullshit since they abridged everything and completely eschewed the soul of the story. David Carradine has a nice voice though.

I really enjoyed The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrat was a great audiobook. Grim at times but keeps you hooked.

The WWZ audiobook is more like a radio drama than an audiobook. Different actors playing each character, sound effects, etc, are not usually found in audiobooks.

Maybe you should look into radio dramas? I'm actually not even sure if they make those anymore.

In the UK, Radio 4 has them on every Sunday I think, there are long running series and famous plays and stuff. You can stream podcasts of them from the BBC website, so I'm guessing you can find a way to download them to take with you.

Dunno if OP would be interested in that, or is even from the UK. Anyway, World War Z is a good listen, Luke Skywalker is in it.

The Hobbit or LOTR

Thank me later.

The Jim Dale readings of the Harry Potter books are great.

Douglas Adams did audiobooks up to So Long and Thanks for All the Fish (he may have done Mostly Harmless, but I've never been able to find it, so I'm skeptical), and hearing the author do his own work is wonderful. In addition, if you really enjoy WWZ, get yourself the original radio dramas of HHGG.

Lord of the Rings has some respectable audiobooks

So does the Wheel of Time series.

Between those, I think you've definitely got enough audiobooks for any road trip.

I haven't gotten to listen to them. I like Fry, but I'm used to Jim Dale for Potter at this point, so it would just feel weird.

I actually have the same issue with Fry and Mostly Harmless; I'm attached to Douglas Adams for the readings, and I just can't get used to another voice, so I've never worked up the courage to get MH on audio.

The main problem with the Jim Dale version is his Hermione voice. Picturing Emma Watson but hearing Jim Dale gives me the strangest dreams...

Oh geez, that's gotta be awful.

Or maybe not, if that's your fetish.

I see your problem - you're picturing the actors.

When listening to Stephen Fry's audiobooks, I simply pictured them as illustrated or otherwise shown up in fanart/author's personal art, or as described in the book. It helped a lot.

I didn't care for Fry's Tonks, but I freakin' love his portrayal of Dumbledore. It was perfect, in comparison to how I'd always imagined he'd be.

I'm listening to that right now and it blows my fragile little mind that it played on the radio in 1956.

First scene: "Hey Lenina, let's meet up and fuck after work."

Full Cast Audio did some good productions.
A voice actor for each cast member. They mostly did YA and Kids stuff though. The Heinlein ones they did are great!

"We're Alive" is amazingly produced, many narrators, sound effects; the whole kitchen sink.

You won't get any deep philosophical connection out of it, but it's a fun story.
