It's funny as a an adult I like The Hobbit more than LotR and the simplicity of a fairy tale setting that leaves your mind to wonder at the world. Gandalf as an eccentric old wanderering wizard is so much more interesting than Gandalf the angel who was sent to help mankind fight the dark lord blah blah blah...

I've got that edition. No, but neither do I think he wrote it specifically for adults.

I think he wrote The Hobbit for children and LOTR for whomever.
