no i just read, im not a weirdo

Depends on the type of book, most fiction I just read straight through (the only exceptions so far have been brick-sized tomes like Infinite Jest or House of Leaves). For philosophy, history, or theology I try and write down definitions, dates etc. I'll use a notebook but I try and put most of it in my Zettelkasten eventually. In the case of fiction this is just so I have a reference of the more confusing points so I can keep it all in my head and in the case of non-fiction this helps build up a knowledge base of the subject in question.

Sometimes
I use a note book 2-5 colored pens for headings bullets and a summary at the end
I dont like doing it, but I like being able to come back to something that is easy to navigate.

Um notebook is trying too hard for my tastes, sometimes I try to synthesize a text with my values by writing it down in notepad, but while I'm reading I write down definitions for words I don't understand and write down either connections my mind makes with the text in the margins or summarize the key points of a complex passage. But I usually avoid writing things down in the book unless I'm on at least my 2nd reading of the text because my interpretation of the text based on my first reading is usually weird and prone to errors.

I do for textbook reading because my memory is dogshit after ten years of hardcore alcohol abuse.

One of the few things that helps things kind of stick.

Going to college at 30 has been interesting.

I underline parts that I find particularly interesting, important or quotable, then copy out some of them after finishing the book. Also I sometimes scrawl shit on the margins.

>I'll often note stuff that I don't want to think too much about now, but want to come back later on, maybe because it'll break my flow, or I simply just don't have the energy or attention for it at that point in time.
>I highlight stuff that I find important, so they come to my notice when I am quickly flipping through pages.
>I note pivotal points in the story as sections.

Constant notetaking is an NPC trait. People that are alive upstairs don't need to write a bunch of random details from the book down on a cheatsheet to be able to think about it.

Non-NPCs just take notes when there's a situation that actually calls for it.

Only females need memory recall you faggot. Taking notes is a feminine trait, man has no need for it.

>Do you guys take notes while reading?
Yes. (Selection bias. People who answer "no" are less likely to open the thread and less likely to respond if they do.)

If so what do you write them on?
A basic text editor on my laptop. Or paper & pencil in non-laptop situations. Sometimes on the book in question.

and why do you like doing it?
I don't particularly *like* doing it. Your question suggests it's just an affectation with no real purpose. A better question would be "Why do you do it?" The answer to that would be:
— Because it aids memory
— Because it helps me organize my facts and group things into categories thereby imposing order and hierarchy and meaning on a gigantic mass of raw data. (I read a lot.)
— Because it makes it easier to steal cool ideas / techniques / etc from other writers to use in my own writing.

Yep, it is accepted fact that women take notes way more. We haven't really figured out *why* this is the case but this is just due to politically correct notions stopping us, if you're a sexist you can put it together (they're super wrapped up in their emotions at all times and can't remember things that don't validate their current state).

If you recognize that it's a retarded thing to do when you don't have a good reason to, stop. You're breaking your flow and taking too long to piece statements together makes you only absurd their meaning in a superficial sense, you can't be immersed

>> No.20000397

>>20000387
This, I might take notes on a reread, but the first time I'm reading a novel I do it in complete silence, trying to be completely immersed.
