Which of his books do you consider to be essential and which can be skipped?

Using italian titles because idgaf, haven’t read much of Calasso but ‘come ordinare una biblioteca’ and ‘l’impronta dell’editore’ are centred on books and Adelphi (Calasso publishing house), very fascinating views on literature and the experience of it.
‘Cento lettere a uno sconosciuto’ is just his introduction to some Adelphi books, not worth it that much.
‘Bobi’ and ‘Meme scianca’ we’re published the day after his death, should be more autobiographical works, Bobi in particular tells some stories about the other cofounder of Adelphi.

Calasso’s best work should be approached chronologically to get a better understanding but you can start from the ones you like best, chronological order is Impuro Folle> Rovina di Kasch > Nozze di Cadmo e Armonia > Ka > K.
Le nozze di Cadmo e Armonia is a perfect start imo, I remember butterfly liked it if this can make you stY away from Calasso

Grazie mille, Anon. Qual'è la tua opinione su Il Libro Di Tutti I Libri?

Planning to start reading Calasso's Cadmus and Harmony tomorrow. Hope the thread keeps being active so I can post my first impressions.

Non so, devo ancora recuperarmelo, ti consiglio di unirti ai gruppi fb riguardanti Adelphi e Calasso per discussioni con gente più acculturata di me

That book sucks. It's one of the worst books I have ever read.

Stopped reading right there

You either have bad taste or are trolling. It’s probably his most popular. Did you want a straight up retelling and were pissed it was a series of essays?

Care to expand on why you think so?

Calasso bros, let's make him Lit-Core!

It's needlessly obfuscatory and Ovid's Metamorphoses is written much better.

No way. The average level of discussion of this board is terrible and making an author popular here can only lower the threads for discussion. While with minor attraction the concentration of posters in the threads is much more consistent and rise the level up.

So is it just a retelling as the other anon said?

>> No.19998324

>>19998163
Yes it's a retelling but then Calasso tries to make it original by turning everything into a weird masturbatory academic paper. I honestly found myself checking my watch when I was reading this book. It was not for me.

You should still read it though, because if you like it, then you can read Calasso's other books.

Just finished the first chapter. What is academic about it? I really liked how it develops into an intwetwining whole where you can see things you had neever seen before about these myths.

I saw Roberto Calasso at a Esselunga in Milan once. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, un po' come stai facendo adesso?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Kinder Ferrero in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Signore, bisognerebbe pagare per questi.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “per prevenire qualsiasi infetterenza elettronica” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Allora per me non funziona, dato che non uso Facebook, ne lo farò mai. Però grazie mille per le tue raccomandazioni. Buona giornata a te, Anon.
