Is there any way to fix the literacy issue in the US? I'm barely out of college, and very few people I know read books anymore. As for those who do read, the books are often surface level literature, or the low quality stuff you'd see in a bookstore bargain bin. What can be done?

It's worse than just not reading books. Vast majority of the kids I teach don't even watch TV shows or movies - which means that they are not engaging with any type of narrative form. They either watch streams or tiktok, which inherently lack a narrative. It is a very boomer thing to say phone bad, but... phone bad. There are just too many distractions.

But aside from that, it's also because schools in most Western countries don't teach phonics or grammar in detail. They used to, when our parents were kids, but now they just expect you to pick it up. The big problem with this is that migrant populations in most Western countries have grown over the past decades and those kids aren't growing up in English speaking environments, so they in fact don't pick up the basics of the language they're expected to use as adults.

I remember hearing once that Thoreau? (Or maybe another 19th century writer) was walking by a field in rural Massachusetts one day, and he met a farmer taking a break and reading under a tree. The farmer was reading The Iliad in Greek - as it was not uncommon for people to learn either latin or greek as children. I remember reading that Massachusetts had quite a high literacy rate at the time too. People also had to go to grammar school even up until the 1950's. Now its' racist to expect proper grammar.

Lastly, I grew up in one of the blue states. I can confirm it's culturally different

My grandfather was a steel mill worker his entire life and loved reading the classics. He read the newspaper every morning like everybody else of his generation. Even though he only had a primary education, they still forced them to memorise poetry and Latin for the mass. It's wild how much has changed.

Yeah. Before the internet and smartphones there were only so many ways to articulate ideas and concepts.

I also think it's a bad sign for our civilization that poetry in general is in decline. Poetry, historically, was the pinnacle of language.The common idea was that if you were learning another language and could master its' poetry, you could master the language.

People come out of college into the workforce. Men and women have to work full time, cars take up tons of commute time, and most young adults get almost no time off things like doing stuff with friends and reading books gets dropped. This is especially true when they have kids. As such young kids are left to largely raise themselves with tvs and tablets when they need to be getting personal attention from their parents to develop properly.

The statistics of some states are also hurt by having large immigrant populations that aren't particularly literate even in their native language, much less in English. Anecdotally their kids are usually pretty good at reading English, as they get a lot of experience from an early age of helping their parents understand things in English and their parents are pretty insistent about making the most of the opportunity of being American.
