It's pretty great I was looking for something with really strong character writing and Practical Guide to Evil has it.

Here's the archive impression that sold me on it.

>I'm following "A Practical Guide to Evil". It starts off like a typical YA novel, but exponentially gets better after the first book.

>The premise is that the laws of "narrative" are embedded into the physical laws of the world, Above and Below are literal gods of (supposed) Good and Evil acting as the audience for the story told on their Creation, although Good is not always good and Evil is not always evil.

>The strong points are its well written characters, great worldbuilding and amazing exploration of politics.

so, question: Is sam legitimately supposed to be a retard? I was under the assumption it might be either because he spent too much time fantasizing about the world outside the shire, or because tolkien wanted him to have more simple, realistic speech patterns so people would relate to him more, but I genuinely don't know

>> No.19935198

Sam is simple, not retarded. Simple hobbit from the Shire. I always thought the function of the Shire remembrance had a lot to do with setting the right mood through contrasts. Whenever Tolkien has Sam and Frodo do something, it's always grueling and somewhat boring, yet by having the reader be reminded of what they are trying to safe, the beautiful shire, we can't help but cheer them on as they go through deserts of doom and boring marshes.

Sure there are the classics, but otherwise we've had to suffer through the likes of David Weber or Jack Campbell, etc. Beyond just the typically vomit-inducing prose, even things like names, terminology, and technological ideas are cringe. It's arguably a rung or two down the ladder from post-Clancy Clancy, even.

probably mother of learning. Don't read it, it is highly overrated also the author is either a chronic coomer or a pathetic misandrist(or both), mc is male but is
a complete simp, there are maybe one or two other male characters but they are
1d and inconsequantial, pretty much all dialogue are between weak mc and strong females, 90% of the story revolves around females, 90% of new and existing characters are females, story moves forward only because of actions and narrative of females. It is absolute trash, what is more worrying is that there is and always has been tons of trash out there, but this novel is actually so highly rated by male readers. Are current year males so pathetic that they just read such misandrist garbage without even realizing it that they are being brainwashed and literally laughed at by a a hating coomer author.

Does it matter much if I don’t read it in order? I got the first 3 books but also some random ones.

Pratchett himself confessed the first couple of books were just him getting in his stride. They're not bad, sure, but certainly not the best ones either. You could read the first couple of books as an intro to the world and then start at Mort or Guards! Guards! and follow the chart for books that come next. Those are undoubtedly the two best novel arcs. You may read the Discworld books in any order too but at least keep them chronological.
The Witches, Witches/Tiffany Aching and Science novels are not really worth reading and don't tie much into the plot of the rest of the books either. You should skip them.

idk if they really have any philosophy beyond 'dominate all others'. Without the mission to kill Moe Sr and the later revelations he receives, Kellhus has no actual purpose. Everything he does is solely in pursuit of that goal. AFAIK Moe Sr only fights the consult because the consults goals would end in a world where Dunyain cannot dominate others because those others are dead or whatever the fuck the inchoroi hope to achieve.

Trying desperately to find a childhood favourite...

A YA fantasy novel series with 4 books written in the 80s or 90s.

>Book One is about some knight or whatever and his lady and the beta squire, but the knight dies and the lady and squire flee.
>Book Two he simps and they fugg. There is a land of people that live in tall towers and have angel wings and one befriends them on their quest. The angel gets her wings broken for helping them but the Lady uses her magic to repair them.
>Book Three I dunno. The Lady can talk any language as she has magic abilities from birth. There is another race of people that can morph into horses in this book. They discover an abandoned tower where dragons lived or something.
>Book 4 I remember nothing from.

i like the world. i dont like the characters. they suck. i also hated how every character acted like a retard most of the time. Or how weak characters are able to suddenly overpower people with godlike powers. didnt finish it.
>worth the candle
yeah the great antimeta novel. it tries so hard to be different that it actually was predictable again. there are far too many issues i have with the novel to list here. still, i wouldnt advice against reading this.
>a practical guide to evil
first chapter starts with a fifteen-year-old untrained orphan girl beating up a grown man with lots of experience in fighting. i like my tomboys in novels, and when it is cultivation/litrpg/magic world there is no reason why a woman cant beat a man. But the mary sue fight is the first scene of the first chapter. didnt read the second chapter.
>wandering inn
This is the greatest webnovel I couldn’t finish.
Such an incredible detailed world, you can see in every chapter how much effort the author put into it. The characters are great, and it took many volumes before the flaws outweigh the pleasure of reading this. The summary would be, that there are no negative consequences.
Nobody dies. Nobody gets punished for they ridiculous behaviour.
However, there is a reason why certain species are hunted down. There is a reason why countries are avoided and some characters are too dangerous to be alive and so on. The author tells you all that.
But when the rules are broken, nothing bad happens. The mass murderer goes free. The traitor with blood on his hands can easily walk the streets again.
Suddenly all the characters don’t act in a logical way. But more like how patreon “fans” want the character to act like. Its just sad how the novel invalidates itself in the later volumes.
>pact
Didn’t read.

>“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” ― C.S. Lewis

I started with color of magic despite this "don't read the first 2 book meme" and I don't know what the fuck they are talking about. Color of Magic is a good book. It's very dense and the pacing will keep your head spinning to the point where it's an imagery explosion in your mind. It's actually surprisingly good pros as well compared to your average modern fantasy writer. I think the fast pace of this first book filters people that can't keep up. Also I don't know why anyone would start with a different book because so far it's a self contained story that introduces the world just fine.

that she protects goblins is the major theme of the story. She feels empathy, and sometimes got burned. Sadly there is no growth for her. The author made it pretty clear that she wont change. Instead she turns into a plot device. Characters meat through her, problems are started or end by her. Her actions are just randon bullshit and nothing of her character is left.
Not knowing what you mean by "raging feminist SJW". Not that i liked Ryoka. She almost got me to quit the novel in the beginning.

However, what was great were all the other characters.
The empire building stuff, the doctor or the mad clown. Even the "short story" with the goblin and the monster were top tier. I enjoyed the majority of the story and it makes me sad that i will never know what happens to Laken and the other characters.

About halfway through Menocht Loop and finding it pretty eh. Usually these time loop stories are built around the idea that the character is learning stuff and achieving mastery of their environment and you learn alongside them and get new information about stuff that seemed innocuous before. Here, the character starts out years into a loop and is already super powerful and every time he "clears" a loop he gets thrown into a completely different one at a different time and space. Q: If you were given a chance would you rewrite the first half of "A Darkness that comes before"? I am asking as it's notorious for being an avalanche of information that weeds out the people who lack the persistence to move on.
A: Yes! That first half puts the reader in a cruel catch-22: they need to know the world to follow the story, and to follow the story to know the world

Regular is known as "traditionally published" through a publisher. Self-publish is you doing everything. In other words, you paying out all the expenses. Editing, cover Art, printing, distribution (most common would be Amazon), marketing (have to pay extra to get noticed on searches), ect...
Self-publishing is more accessible through websites like Amazon and they give you different options. People that even publish on Amazon successfully put it a lot of work and cash to make professional. A traditional publisher handles everything leaving you more time to write. Problem is, you got to be lucky to get picked up by publisher.

I think that they write the books and then often through revision discover a need to let the reader what in the fuck is happening in the beginning of the book. I agree it's not necessary and it does seem overdone in the genre. That said, it's usually better to hammer through it and see how the book opens in chapter 1.

If you want to find your book in any barns and noble, you have to be published traditionally for the most part. I'm sure you can work out deals to get them in your local book store, but any deal you broker for yourself is not going to rival the distribution power of a major publisher. If they think your book is going to be hot they will pay for putting it out on that front display table for example. They even have an edge when it comes to Amazon. Books from publishers get preference on most search results. On paper though, you can make more money through self publishing on Amazon but the people that are most successful in that route are strategic with a plan. They are really talented from a business perspective and write large amount of books in order to hook an audience or they have an existing fanbase in order to shill their book to like a youtuber.

One author I came across puts out one book every month and he makes enough from that to have quit his day job and just focus on writing and he still supports a family that way. His only social media is a monthly facebook post and some reddit posts.

Of course anecdotes really mean fuck all but I'm just saying it's possible. He writes a niche genre and I guess the sub reddit for that genre is active enough that people reading anything new that gets posted on kindle unlimited are enough to fund his life. So finding a community like that is another option if you don't want to waste time on social media and don't mind writing for a specific audience.

Wandering Inn was such a series of missed opportunities and cop outs.
It started off great by deconstructing most portal fantasies. Erin had immense struggles adapting to an alien world with a culture that's far different from her own. When she's just starting to get her footing, she gets knocked back down from the mountain due to the consequences of her naive actions and has to pull her way back up again.
It was damn good and I enjoyed it up until what you said - where consequences for actions were being thrown out the window.
I apparently stopped at the point before a mass murderer got off scot-free and I'm glad I did.
And like a lot of people Ryoka was another huge factor for me tapping out. Good lord, what a terrible character. I thought at the point she got her legs crunched she would have been humbled it'd serve to develop her but of course she gets healed. And I'm supposed to believe this girl who refuses to "be controlled by leveling up" could do enough damage to a Minotaur that it would piss him off? Or run through a death mountain that no other runner lived to the tale?

>>19941040
It's sad to hear she turned into a plot device because of the stubborn author. Erin was the main reason I was hooked by this story for awhile. She was getting some good growth after Klbkch's death. But alas, I could see the signs of her going back to being static when she refused to let Toren learn to fight for her.

>> No.19946228

>>19945210
>I apparently stopped at the point before a mass murderer got off scot-free and I'm glad I did.
I continued for a bit longer, mostly because I enjoyed the other pov enough. But yeah, yesterday I checked the novels Wikipedia site to see what happened since I stopped.
Turns out, Erin gets “killed”, but to everyone’s surprise she isn’t actually dead. Then every character spends the entire Volume (!) trying to resurrect her while she is doing some bullshit in the land of the dead.
I don’t regret dropping it.
Ryoka: I forgot about her rejection of the levelling system.
But now I remember how much I hated her accepting the bullshit fairy magic later on. And btw, her buddy the frost faerie which died? She isn’t dead of course.

>Wandering Inn was such a series of missed opportunities and cop outs.
The major problem is that the story spends so much time to explain the world. It invites the reader to question the world in a way that no other litrpg story had. And it answered these questions, even when the answer was not pretty.
No, people are not equal. Sacrificing ten level 10 warriors to create a single level 20 warrior is worth the price if you don’t care about the individual.
Goblins can be reasoned with. But there is a reason why every goblin should be dead. It’s sad and you can feel pity for them. I can fully understand Erins motivation. But the hate the other species feel for these fuckers isn’t unreasonable. It came from near extermination of all sentient species. A guitar playing goblin in an inn won’t change their perception of them.

However, while the story explains all this stuff it never follows through.
There is a death penalty for certain crimes. But it never gets put into effect.
There is a reason why an alien race like the antinium is feared (and we know that people who mistrusts them are 100% correct). But suddenly everyone is accepting and they turn into normal people. They can even fall in love with humans now! Does it makes? Doesnt this destroy the entire principal of the antinium species?
Who cares! But patreons can do all the stupid fan stuff and be happy about their favourite characters falling in love with each other.

I'm going to assume you mean
Calruz
when you say "Mass Murderer", so I think it's important to note a few things about that whole sitation story-wise

1.
As is made exceedingly clear, Calruz was (potentially) completely batshit insane during his stay in the dungeon, and has now been restored to sanity. It would go against Zevarra's character for her to kill him when he was acting under extenuating circumstances, which is why she has to support Calruz (plus she wants Minotaur D)
2.
It isn't as though Calruz learns nothing from his experience and doesn't develop as a character. By allowing him to survive, the author is able to take the opportunity to explore how someone who had done something horrific without their full control is able to react to that and live with themselves going forwards.
3.
Even with Zevarra on Calruz's side, it is only with Erin's intervention that he is prevented from being lynched. I'm not arguing whether or not Erin SHOULD have saved Calruz, but I do think that it would go completely against Erin's character for her to simply sit there and allow Calruz to die when there was a possibility for her to do something about it.
Overall, The Wandering Inn has always been a story about hope. It would go against the story's tone to not allow
a character like
Calruz
a chance to atone and redeem themselves (which, if the other redemption arcs in the story
are anything to go by, will not end with everyone randomly loving and being okay with
Calruz
again one chapter.)
Even in the darkest of storylines (apart from the Rhir Wall arc), everything always ends up turning out for the best.

As for the Ryoka issue... she gets better after Reitzmelt I guess, and starts taking a backseat to the immortal stuff ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway, I absolutely adore The Wandering Inn, would recommend to anyone if you can get past the rocky first book.

Even in the darkest of storylines (apart from the Rhir Wall arc), everything always ends up turning out for the best, but not without the characters changing and adapting to their new conditions as well. The core of the book is people living in a dangerous, 'realistic' fantasy world but still managing to change things for the better, grow stronger, and become better people for it.

As for the Ryoka issue, she constantly gets punished for her fuckups until she finally wises up after going to Reitzmelt. After that she starts taking a bit more of a back seat to all the immortal stuff.

Anyway, I absolutely adore The Wandering Inn, would recommend to anyone if you can get past the rocky first book.
