Mariana is a PhD student at the University of Glasgow where she is interested in ethics, feminist theory, and encountering the Other in Tolkien's works. She says:

the possibility of transcending the canon by questioning the very pillars that would supposedly sustain it. Current discussions amongst Tolkien scholars,
admirers, and detractors towards the creation of more inclusive readings and
adaptations of his works already bear witness to this movement.
Furthermore, at the beginning of his text, Moran claims that “the aesthetic and
emotional experience of reading is nearly impossible to share, but arguing about
the canon of a genre we love is the closest we can get” (4). This review begs to
differ: if fantasy has endured such a long and healthy life, it has clearly done so
thanks to its ability to reinvent itself constantly and to the multifarious paths it has
traced—and is yet to draw—to share its past, present, and future.

This quotation has elicited unwarranted and unacceptable abuse and misinformation from certain quarters who have taken against the series’ diverse casting.

We are saddened to see hate and abuse directed towards a person of colour researching Tolkien, and we stand by Mariana, her research, and her inclusive approach to fantasy. These are values the Centre shares, clearly articulated in our Code of Conduct.

I almost did a math PhD as a gringo-maxxing ginger latinx female goth, bangs and all. I had to drop out because I was an illegal immigrant with no money but I did complete all the coursework and oral exams. My department had plenty of women, around 30%, and most were either foreigners or local working white women whose company payed them to get a PhD. Most girls seem to do a PhD for practical reasons rather than for research in academia, so if the latter is your goal you don’t have to worry about them at all.

It may be because my program was so shitty, but some of these Chinese women (native and foreign born) were always so fucking clueless and needed handholding for everything, especially anything related to computers or programming, or anything at all really. I used to think they were manipulating me, but they really were that dumb. They react the same way niggers react to street magicians if you open up the command line.

Overall, most of the other women were studious. No one adopted an alternative style. No one was too political. Almost everyone was non-confrontational and introverted.

The only thing you should be wary of are the US-born minorities and self-loathing whites. These kinds don’t make it very often past the 1st year of the degree, but it does happen. I knew a wyt latinx who was both of these. She threw away all her meds one day and had regular BPD breakdowns in the department head’s office and went completely psychotic after her genius-tier BF left her and moved to the most prestigious university in his field.
