Alright, here we go. Never been here before, I'm more of a /b/ guy.

I was addicted to MMO's for about 3 years. About a year ago I cancelled all that shite and said fugg it.

I'm 28 now, I own my own home, and I'm not a fatass. And I have a good job.

No problem there. I have no desire to go back to MMO's.

The problem is, I was always a heavy drinker, and now I have nothing to do, so I replace MMO's with drinking more.

It is out of control now. If I don't get a handle on things I can see myself losing my job and home.

I really want to stop drinking. But I need some good Authors/Series about fantasy rogues and mages and stuff.

There are a few used book stores near my house.

tl;dr ex WoW nerd. Suggest books. (NOT WOW-LORE BOOKS!)

Malcom Lowry's Under the Volcano will get you out of the rut.. and beat the shit out of you

A Song of Ice and Fire.

I guess you could try the Wheel of Time series as well. Some of the middle books lagg a bit, but judging from what you posted, I bet you would enjoy it. Also, its 13 (with one more on the way) books long, so it can keep you occupied for a bit.

>> No.1992587

why don't you ask for actual literature instead, op? there's no reason for someone to be 28 & still wanting to read regressive fantasy novels.

provide some.
I'm not closed mined.

I'm taking all of this to heart. Trust me. It's better than blindingly guessing what books to buy. Thank you all, You are all helping me get out my rut. Thank you.

>Different guy then who suggested "actual literature"

Now, I'm not like a lot of people on /lit/ who deem the fantasy genre to be totally unreadable, but I do agree you should branch out a bit.

As for suggestions, just lurk a bit and pic books you think have interesting stories. I don't want to just sit here and suggest you a bunch of classics or philosophical works.

Check out the sticky. It has some great books in it. Just check the different genre's in the recommended reading list, google any title that you think might interest you, read about it, and decide from there.

I know it doesn't fall under what you asked for, but read some Charles Dickens. Great Expectations and David Copperfield will motivate you to get your life on track. Promise.

As for fantasy; try The Hobbit. Followed by LotR to get you started.

Yo, here's the solution. Listen up you fucking idiot before you destroy your life.

You have an addictive personality. You cannot change this. What you can do is to become addicted to exercise, instead. Throw out all your booze. The only drinking you should allow yourself to do is at the bar. The expense and effort should help moderate your habits. When you feel shitty, like you need a drink or an MMO pickup, go for a run instead. If it's too hot outside, buy an Everlast Jumprope and skip in a cool room.

>> No.1992930

Read for enjoyment, OP.
If you want fantasy, then go ahead and read it.
This whole reading to 'be an adult' is horseshit. If you want to look at comic book pictures, then fucking do that to. Do whatever the fuck you want.

>> No.1992933

OP, read Robert E. Howard's Conan the Cimmerian stories. It's what you want and respectable, unlike most things in the "sword and sorcery" genre.

A book about a guy who spends his time pining away over some whore like a betta. Yeah, real motivating. Charles Dickens sucks.
