General Dreedle's nurse always followed General Dreedle everywhere he went, even into the briefing room just before the mission to Avignon, where she stood with her asinine smile at the side of the platform and bloomed like a fertile oasis at General Dreedle's shoulder in her pink-and-green uniform. Yossarian looked at her and fell in love, desperately. His spirits sank, leaving him empty inside and numb. He sat gazing in clammy want at her full red lips and dimpled cheeks as he listened to Major Danby describe in a monotonous, didactic male drone the heavy concentrations of flak awaiting them at Avignon, and he moaned in deep despair suddenly at the thought that he might never see again this lovely woman to whom he had never spoken a word and whom he now loved so pathetically. He throbbed and ached with sorrow, fear and desire as he stared at her; she was so beautiful. He worshiped the ground she stood on. He licked his parched, thirsting lips with a sticky tongue and moaned in misery again, loudly enough this time to attract the startled, searching glances of the men sitting around him on the rows of crude wooden benches in their chocolate-colored coveralls and stitched white parachute harnesses.

"Family members became desperate to dissuade Thomas (Aquinas), who remained determined to join the Dominicans. At one point, two of his brothers resorted to the measure of hiring a prostitute to seduce him. As included in the official records for his canonization, Thomas drove her away wielding a burning log - with which he inscribed a cross onto the wall - and fell into a mystical ecstasy; two angels appeared to him as he slept and said, "Behold, we gird thee by the command of God with the girdle of chastity, which henceforth will never be imperiled. What human strength can not obtain, is now bestowed upon thee as a celestial gift." From that moment on, Thomas was given the grace of perfect chastity by Christ..."

Not him, but I did take a whole semester. It was worse. A manic, yet depressing tour between condescending infantilization, the most empty didactic repetition, ambiguous and arcane criteria, infinite walls, checkmark and stamps required for any sort of branching or early progress in learning, utterly despondent educators, especially when the knowledge sought was not strictly conforming to their specific subset of the specific section of the specific chapter for the specific week we were at... In short, it was entirely useless for any sort of productive ends, innovation or practical application, plus the absurd cost for something supposed to benefit society. I began reading the subject book and was pleasantly satisfied, so I re-read the chapters relevant to my interests until I had almost memorized them . Unfortunately my course-mates loathed the subject by that point and my attempts to stimulate discussion got me looks of consternation at first and utterly disingenuous arguments next. They were not prepared in half a semester enough compared to my week of leisurely reading, i thought.

This passage is funny but it's also untrue. A British Thermal Unit is the amount of energy it takes to elevate the temperature of a pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. A gallon of water at room temperature(~72 F) contains 8.34 pounds of water. To boil water at standard conditions, you must raise it's temperature to 212 F.

212 F - 72 F= 140 F

Technically, you're supposed to convert Fahrenheit temperatures to Rankine but when considering the difference between two temperatures, you can just swap the units.

140 R x 8.34 BTU/R = 1167.6 BTU

The oats are, by right, the oats of the one who gathers them. However, to refuse to even consider the sharing of the oats with one's own brother is destestable. What one gains in body mass from hoarded oats, one loses equally- or doublefold- in the soul. "What is a pig if not size?" Is indeed a faur question; But what is size if there is no substance beneath? The true beauty of this post is act two, in which the brother's cousin is introduced. Once she makes her way into the story and, by her words, reveals herself to be an exponentially worse offender in terms of the vices the hoarding brother ascribed to the begging brother, the hoarding brother changed his tone and saw that the gains of his family is equally as important as his own. However, he did not grow in character enough to extend this newfound virtue with his cousin, as she still was unfavorable in his eyes. Regardless, his growth in soul is both uplifting and real. His sharing of the oats with his brother may minimize his physical gain, but he will more than recover that lost size in his physche, as his brother grows with him in both aspects, as well as a third- them growing closer together. This craftsmanship and beautiful interweaving of wonderful narrative and compelling character is truely Dostoevskyesque; I have never seen anything moreso- no, not even Fyodor's works themselves.
Masterpiece.

We all know that non-uniform measuring systems exist because of the human need (and skill) for estimating in the field and on the fly, and eventually those estimates were formalized. Hi, you must be new here.

On /lit/ it's common courtesy to, at the very least, ensure your images are rotated and/or deskewed appropriately. Further, for the sake of the visually impaired it is also good etiquette to increase the contrast of text images.

See pic related: with a few simple commands I was able to generate this image using imagemagick:

convert input.jpg -white-threshold 35% -monochrome -deskew 40% -fuzz 20% -trim output.jpg

If you want to be part of this community there is a baseline of respect you need to show other members. Part of that is uploading high quality, easy-to-read images.

While this argument is pretty goofy, I learned something about Fahrenheit that I didn't know, and hidden inside the goofy argument is a good argument for why we still use imperial units in many non-scientific fields for convenience (cooking, construction) which, though I think most people understand already, is nice to have put into words.

fuck metric, we are being forced to use it because of a bunch of jacobin faggots with their heads up their asses.
metric in fact demonstrates much of what's wrong with modern thought and anglo philosophy in specific, look at >>19933363

>> No.19940849

>>19940376
Metric is less practical, but it's far more convenient to relate different scales efficiently in scientific literature and reduces the need for notoriously error-prone conversions.
A similar switch occurred in chemistry, where each country tended to have a highly arbitrary set of naming conventions. The international system made naming less elegant, but far easier to understand, less error-prone and more efficient overall to transmit relevant information. As a chem student i had to learn both systems so i can attest at how the local naming convention courses were the most dreaded and arbitrary.

Here's how we use metric/imperial here in Leafland.
>weight
Pounds for people and stuff up to like 50 lbs.
Kg for very heavy things.
>temperature
Fahrenheit for oven/cooking temperatures and, most importantly, swimming pool temperatures.
Celsius for everything else.
>speed
km/h, always.
>distance/measurements
mm/cm for very small things.
Interchangeable in/cm for things up to like a meter.
Generally feet (or sometimes meters) for things up to like 30 ft.
Meters for larger than that and km for large, travel distances.
Feet and inches for people's height, always.

So for everyday life, it's a mix of the two systems.
When doing scientific/engineering/calculations though, it's 100% metric, imperial is so fucking completely, absolutely, painfully retarded when you start doing maths with it.

Not sure where you're from but distance is measured in time. I don't know how many km away Ottawa is, but I know how many hours drive it is.

Fahrenheit is used for indoor temperature as well. C is basically just for outside temp.

all trades use imperial measures. Almost all measures are imperial. Way more natural to measure in feet than meters.
