It is. His wife admitted that he mostly made the whole thing up, and gulags were so bad they even tried to treat his cancer there.
I had the links about these when I considered myself a leftist but I deleted all my links when I grew out of it but you can probably find this infos yourself. If you want to criticize the USSR he is probably your worst choice.

Because being a leftist isn't really about studying Marx or organizing labor for them, it's about keeping their comfortable 1990s-2000s liberal left counterculture on life support. They want to feel like it's still ca. the year 2000 forever, the golden age when you could just be a university student watching Jon Stewart, reading CLR James and Frantz Fanon (because they're easier than Marx but it still seems like you're "into" something leftist), acting like smoking weed is a radical anti-establishment act, and trying to get laid at parties alongside a dozen clones of yourself.

Rebellion was easy and comfortable, ivory tower leftism was still the designated outsider, anti-establishment thing to do. It still had enough cachet that you could do it as a trust fund kid who mysteriously never has to get a real job, perpetually living in an overpriced hipster neighborhood, and not feel inauthentic. You could delude yourself that The Revolution was coming in the comfortably distant but comfortably near future, some time after your eternal twenties, so you still have time to go to party and try to fuck dudeweed arthoes who have rich dads too.

The actual content of Marxist theory, the thing about workers uniting, was an afterthought, just a mythology that justified the perpetual on-the-horizonness of The Revolution by being the right amount of vague.

Now it's lame and bourgeois to be leftist, the arthoes have fled to Bernie socdem shit and identity politics or just become post-irony basic. The only people left in the left are extremely neurotic transgenders who make the air so thick with neurosis that only other, even more neurotic people bother to join up anymore. All the fun and carefreeness of parroting which governments the CIA illegally toppled and pretending to care about the Zapatistas is bittersweet now, because nobody's listening and nobody cares. Competition for clout is too high with the advent of twitter zoomers trying to be theorybloggers, for too small a yield since nobody really cares anyway.

None of the old libleft talking points gel into a plausible persona anymore. You can't just go "pfft... CIA, am I right?" and get your 0.4% chance of getting laid at the trust fund 420 weed party anymore. When they try to dive deeper into theory, which for them means watching one or two more youtube videos than they normally would so they can find out who Luxemburg is and if they're a based tankie or a based trot, like the in-group lingo says, the situation doesn't get any better, they just become more associated with socially marginal weirdos. This is painful for leftists, because they are rich lazy narcissists who want a persona that makes them feel good without effort, thought, or commitment.

They can't actually change or put in new effort, so they just flail and increase the volume when in the presence of people who aren't interested in their faded persona (an increasing majority).

Very cynical and apt description of it. In fact, modern “woke” bullshit is something like the masters throwing scraps off tables for the dogs, or like something they ramp up in everything in lieu of actual benefits for the masses while the corporate masters get richer and richer. Instead of being afraid of and despising the politicians and the evil policies they push or simply the lack of good ones they push, they have people afraid of the infamous “alt-right”, “White supremacy,” and “the rise of fascism” in the country (which, in fact, are usually just basic common people wanting basic common things, which they also disparage as “populism”). So, while the quality of life generally gets poorer and the elites benefit themselves, slogans like “Smash Whiteness” and “Destroy the patriarchy” are ramped up in everything as a sort of distraction, and, sadly enough, without really changing anything for the better. This creates a controlled dialectic where people, hating this woke bullshit and feeling their way of life is under attack, take on deliberately opposing sides in the culture wars and some even embrace ideologies like Nazism, fascism, White supremacy, and the like, or simply just being an offensive buffoon like Trump was, as a sort of way to “get back” or “rebel” against this toxic, totalitarian, and inane woke ideology. Sadly enough, however, such a reaction simply plays into the hands of the elites and society at large more, paradoxically justifying a new Domestic War on Terror, more canceling of dissenters, more Big Tech censorship, etc.

A common leftist argument is, “The ‘leftist’ politicians in the West aren’t even true leftists but rather monopoly capitalists with a thin woke veneer added.” This is one valid way to put it. Some more involved analyses, however, and knowledge of things like the influence of Saul Alinsky on well-known figures like Obama and Hillary, of the Democratic Party’s unabashed adjacency to/association to socialism in a minority of figures like Sanders and the “Squad”, as well as of Klaus Schwab of the World Economic Forum’s ideas of the “Great Reset” and “stakeholder capitalism” (which John Kerry as Biden’s envoy to the World Economic Forum affirmed Biden’s support of) puts radical leftism and a pseudo-socialist takeover of America as a POSSIBLE outgrowth of all this woke bullshit. One interesting little tidbit about it from the Mises Institute:

https://mises.org/wire/great-reset-part-iv-stakeholder-capitalism-vs-neoliberalism

>Stakeholders consist of “customers, suppliers, employees, and local communities” in addition to shareholders. But for Klaus Schwab and the WEF, the framework of stakeholder capitalism must be globalized. A stakeholder is anyone or any group that stands to benefit or lose from any corporate behavior—other than competitors, we may presume. Since the primary pretext for the Great Reset is global climate change, anyone in the world can be considered a stakeholder in the corporate governance of any major corporation. And federal partnerships with corporations that do not “serve” their stakeholders, like the Keystone Pipeline project, for example, must be abandoned. Racial “equity,” the promotion of transgender agendas, and other such identity policies and politics, will also be injected into corporate sharing schemes.

>If anything, stakeholder capitalism represents a consumptive worm set to burrow into and hollow out corporations from within, to the degree that the ideology and practice find hosts in corporate bodies. It represents a means of socialist wealth liquidation from within capitalist organizations themselves, using any number of criteria for redistribution of benefits and “externalities.”

>But don’t take my word for it. Take one David Campbell, a British socialist (although non-Marxist) and author of The Failure of Marxism (1996). After declaring that Marxism had failed, Campbell began advocating stakeholder capitalism as a means to the same ends. His argument with the British orthodox Marxist Paddy Ireland represents an internecine squabble over the best means of achieving socialism, while also providing a looking glass into the minds of socialists determined to try other, presumably nonviolent tacks.

Of course, a common rebuke of analyses like these and warnings about the possible rise of Marxism or Marxist-like systems in this country reminiscent of what happened in the USSR or the CCP, is that these are simply people having thoughts implanted in their head by “the bigoted GOP and their corporate masters, being brainwashed to vote against their own best self-interests”. This is, ironically, itself an argument stemming from a worldview parallel to what happened/happens in the USSR, and in the CCP with the Chinese Cultural Revolution and struggle sessions. In the USSR, for instance, the kulaks (semi-wealthy/middle-class land-owners) were the ones who were reputedly the cause of the suffering of the peasants and whom vilification of and caricatures of were justified in the news and society at large. In the modern West, an analogous process is going on, where anyone who objects to woke bullshit is seen as having a lower moral standing, being a buffoon, inferior mentally and emotionally, “brainwashed by alt-right misinformation,” and the like. Or as Hillary infamously put them, “Deplorables.”

True, the most terrifying aspect of the USSR was its obsession with managing information and optics. The entire holohoax is just a fraction of the spider web of lies spread by the USSR. It's quite fascinating from that perspective alone.

Something that has stuck in my mind is why the truth was so easily manipulated in that crucial time period. You had all sorts of characters, respected intellectuals, spewing fisherman's tales about historical events and facing zero backlash or skepticism. Was lying as rampant in antiquity and the stakes were just lower? Or was that time period particularly lie driven? Modern society cannot brazenly lie on the scale that was taking place in the 1900-70s.

Modern lies are subtler and the truth eeks its way out of the lie by a thousand cuts. Take the vaccine issue. Despite the rushed egregious claims of institutional power the truth is surfacing at a steady rate as the prerequisite time to fully investigate the disease and vaccine attempt elapses. The state is still an abusive parent gaslighting its children/citizens, but the mechanism of information generation is functioning on schedule.

No way in hell would a 1950s world that embraced the holohoax narrative ever even dare to question the state narrative of the experimental vaccines. The populace is just as willing to lapse into psychosis, but the information generating machine is much more robust.

The modern state's only option is not to control optics or the narrative but to control the speed at which narratives are created. Truth moves too quickly to erode lies to enshrine fake narratives like the holohoax. Effort is spent to prolong the lie, but the prognosis is to pivot to a new distraction rather than fight a lost information war. And truth generation rate is speeding up every year even as distractions speed up. At some rate that speed (distractions) crosses a limit and state authority crumbles completely.

The entire holohoax is predicated upon soviet side death camps that were altered under soviet rule and soviet photoshopped images. Don't even try to deny that the USSR were not obsessed with altering images.

I realized after reading this that “An Experiment in Literary Investigation” which is printed on the cover of the newer editions is the perfect description of this work. It really is a masterpiece in experimental writing.
How many other authors have managed to weave autobiography and historical writing into what can only be described as the form of a postmodern/maximalist pseudo-novel?
Does anything else like this exist that is as well done and not just a cheap rip off of Solzhenitsyn?

It’s fucking scary times we are living in. I’m a bit of a Russiaboo and there’s no doubt in my mind that America (and if we are being honest, the entire Anglosphere) has reached a similar stage in its history that continental Europe was in in between WW1 and WW2. Our governments are totally out of control and have become so drunk with power that they likely have no idea just how disconnected they are from reality anymore. The lies and abuse of the common people just flow like a broken dam
