Scarlet Citadel is really good and has lots of twists and turns. What now?

>> No.19915028

>>19915018
The fast paced battle scenes were interesting, the characters introspective, and the other species different enough to give thought to how they regard humans beings in general. Part of it, I think, was that the characters' names were so close in style, indicating affiliation, that it was hard to tell them apart until their setting or actions dictated it. There were also very many useless characters in a lot of unrelated settings that felt confusing, because they were so similar to other settings. In the end, while the story is far from over, it didn't have the hold on me that made me want to immediately pick up the sequel to see what happens next.

Not very good.

Hmm, ok, I didn't realise that the undines were only the females (aka the brides of abaia, right?). The fact that he's "one of them" aka like abaia and erebus, rather than one of their followers, doesn't really change much though, does it? This really seems like a small mistake of terminology, but thanks for pointing it out.

I agree with you that all of the plot points you mentioned and more are really great, I thoroughly enjoyed the story, but what I don't understand is the whole reputation of "needing a second/third reread" and "having a deeper narrative that you can't understand the first time". On reddit someone asked if "BOTNS is really as intimidating as people say" and the replies go like:

>The book will not make sense the first time through.
>everytime you reread, you peel a layer of the onion

etc., etc., But when I try and research what these "inner layers of the onion" are, all I can find are things that can be understood easily by (carefully) reading only once, without even referring back or anything. That's why I'm confused and a bit disappointed.

>>19915091

Yes, obviously there was heaps of christian symbolism, bible references, jesus allegories, severian was obviously a christ-like figure, etc. I noticed plenty of these, and they are discussed heavily online. My problem is that every review and critique of this story acts like it's incredibly subtle and deeply hidden when really the book hits you over the head with the whole "severian as christ" thing the whole way through.

I really enjoyed the series, I just had really high expectations that the entire thing was going to turn on its head and reveal that everything was not as it seemed, based on the ridiculously lofty reviews I'd read online. Instead, it was just a great sci-fi/speculative/literary fiction with heaps of good concepts, a unique setting and creative perspective.

I'm not trying to brag that I totally understood everything on my first go, but I'm really not, I'm just saying that I fully expected to get more from it the second time through, and instead got nothing but the same story again and I thought I might be missing something more fundamental than just a few subtle plot points here and there.

Basically I just wish I hadn't read any reviews before I started, I know I would have enjoyed it way more without this expectation.

Finishing this book was like reading an /sffg/ thread. Sheer disappointment.

I started the Northworld trilogy after finishing pic related. It's about a guy who is sent to a hidden planet which had three teams sent and subsequently went missing. I'm not very far, a few chapters in. The summary paints MC as a badass so I want to see what happens. He's gotten to the planet area thing and was sent to a pocket dimension. Somehow, the 'antagonists' who run Northworld have access to something called the Matrix which lets them do whatever they want, the inevitable magickal sci-fi mcguffin. We'll see what happens.
The only mention of Northworld on /lit/ was once a few years back in passing.

Disappointed is the wrong word, I liked it a lot. I was just
1) trying to make sure I hadn’t completely missed something, as some online discussion would imply, and
2) frustrated that I read the whole thing twice, digging it apart, trying to read between the lines, and find the ‘secret inner layers’, only to realise that just because some reddit pseuds couldn’t understand it doesn’t mean it was actually that deep and I should have just been enjoying the ride.

I still find myself wondering about Severan being sort of spread throughout time by the exultants and their masters those angel judges.
They seem to copy him, like putting him thousands of years ago as Apu whatever, and also manipulate his time steam in a strange way. Like he clearly died by downing, but was either copied or undone or the undine altered him in some way but the undines are opposed to the angel guys, so not sure why they'd bring him back.
Also he seems to hang out in his own tomb as a boy.

I dunno, it's not so much there's a big Prestige reveal that turns the narrative on it's head so much as no matter how long you spend thinking about it you're never quite sure what's really going on.
It reminds me of Twin Peaks and Lynch in general. There's theories that fit 90%, but never everything.

It might feel like a cheap trick if it wasn't done so perfectly that just feels real and like you can almost grasp it.

It's definitely an entertaining series, but I have to admit, I have not read the series as a whole.

I'm just curious if anyone has read the entire series? What did you think?

1. The world of MRA and PUA is essentially a bunch of self-important, self-righteous, bigots who want to have their way with women. The women who participate in it are either masochistic, or weak-willed, or both. And if you don't do what they want, you get called names, or told to suck it up, or kicked out of the group.

2. The women who don't get what the men want are called bitches, sluts, or slags. There's even an acronym for it: SLAM.

3. When they get what they want, it's because they're naturally submissive and feminine, and the men are naturally dominant and masculine.

The real answer is that they think that non-whites don't read fantasy because fantasy doesn't include non-whites. So the idea is that if they write woke fantasy, then blacks will start reading it and increase their revenue. But what happens is that blacks don't start reading fantasy because they never cared about it and whites stop reading because they don't want to read woke trash. Instead of just writing non-woke fantasy again they decide to try to guilt trip whites into reading woke fantasy (by calling them a racist or sexist or homophobe, etc. if they don't buy woke books) and hope that the blacks will come around eventually so they can make slightly more money in the end.

If you passed book one, how can you complain about the sick shit in unholy consult?

Are these the type of faggets that want people to move goalposts or edit already finished works to suite them?

I wonder what triggered them

The first trilogy was edited by, what I would unironically assume, a real professional editor.

No typos, no amateur slip ups, no unnecessary fodder etc... The Aspect Emperor Series, on the other hand, was filled with those things. Thing's I've noticed on the first readthrough.
