Not unless you like cuckoldry. I was deceive into reading them and I regret it ever since.

Let me give you a quick rundown on The Darkness That Comes Before:

>100 pages into first apocalypse book
>the love of one of pov character is literally selling her body while he watched her do so. she's standing on her balcony welcoming him back home, as she's fresh from the downdicking
>their big love story is actually pov character going after (but never finding) a sex customer that hurt the girl.
Dropped it after that and never looked back.

The Second Apocalypse (Bakker's Magnum Opus) is a tremendously refreshing well-written masterpiece. I couldn't give you enough adjectives to make it justice.
He also happens to be one of the best contemporary fantasy authors. Arguably the best living one, in my humble opinion.
Just ignore the memes, people get out of control when Bakker is mentioned. On both sides, I might add. Still worth checking out for yourself, regardless.

If you really are new here, then you need to understand two main things:
1. Bakker is the most popular author in this general's history, as seen by the sheer number of memes and praise/hate posting.
2. Low IQs / Poorly trained ESLs cannot understand his prose, which is why any mention of him quickly devolves into shit-posting and false flagging. They can't cope with the fact that they will never be part of the club.

But it was also an exacting one, a soul that demanded clarity and resolution. As a babe he had slept in his mother’s arms no matter what the court or domestic furor. The clamour meant nothing to him, so long as beloved arms held him tight, so long as the beloved face smiled down.

Deep Dive - Ron Walters (2022)

Both the author and readers have compared this to Blake Crouch's Dark Matter. I haven't read Dark Matter and probably won't ever. If I had looked into this book a bit more I wouldn't have read it, and overall that would've been for the better. I went into this with the wrong expectations. It's only nominally science fiction at best and only marginally about videogames. As the author notes, it's not even really a technothriller, though I don't seem to like those either. This is primarily a book where the protagonist is just along for the ride and the plot progresses due to external forces. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the pivotal plot point is him arguing on Reddit.

Pop culture, mostly videogames and movies, are regularly namedropped for decorative effect. There were times where it felt like he was trying to meet a quota and was just shoehorning in references. Based on what the author says in this interview I'm going to assume that this was written by the author with the hope it would be published because it supposedly copies a relatively very popular book and the publisher thought people would buy it for the same reason.
https://paulsemel.com/exclusive-interview-deep-dive-author-ron-walters/

Walters does have some strengths in his writing, but for whatever reason his weaknesses are showcased instead. I'd certainly give him another chance if he wrote a book that was about what he does well, namely family life and psychological horror somewhat similar to PKD. Instead, what I got was a bait and switch and arguably a misrepresentation. I blame marketing.

The ending is awful. It's one of the worst I've read in years. It ruined whatever enjoyment I had. I don't know if there's a word for it, but it's in the uncanny valley of plausibility between the metaphorical and literal. It isn't abstract enough to where you can take it on faith and enjoy it for what it is. It also isn't logical enough to where hopefully anyone would believe it's a reasonable explanation. The ending is so bad that I'm glad that I didn't like rest of the book more because then it would've severely painful rather than disappointing.

I was reluctant to write this, because as it says in the book:
People say the truth will set you free, but they’re wrong. The truth fucking sucks. The truth will tear your heart out of your chest and crush your soul and splinter your mind until your body is nothing more than a hollow shell.

That's just the games and movies. There are also magazines, tv series, people, music, and various other sorts of pop culture mentioned. There's also a few games I didn't include because it wasn't 100% clear that's what was being referenced.

My stance on pop culture references is that how many are allowable is entirely dependent on the context. In this case it is overly much, but it's also set on Earth in contemporary times, so I allow for a lot more.

Finishing up this series. It was alright, but a bit too animesque. The world simply wasn't believable - it was just a means to an end and built around the conflict first. Characters were pretty shallow and gimmick-ey, but I have to admit I liked Bliss and Petal. I thought Caulder's use of quotation was going to be this, but it actually had a pretty fun payoff at the end even if it didn't go far. Romances weren't too believable, but I like the character interactions overall. Shera and Lukon specifically. It just kind of... happens. Even worse since it feels like the author is setting up Darius to be a romance after Lukon's death, but I'm already halfway through the final book and that doesn't seem to be happening. That romance works. Lukon should have been a backstory and already dead and Darius should have been introduced sooner to be a proper romantic arc. The ending on Caulder's side was pretty good, but I'm a little nervous about how Shera's will end. The interspersed flashbacks made the books feel a bit schizophrenic, and I think they would have absolutely been better as a trilogy instead of three duologies. Though admittedly, I probably wouldn't have started if the book was twice as long as it was, so it was probably the right choice, at least from a marketing perspective. Also, this might just be me, but why did both major players - the consultants and the black watch - both have to wear black? Did the author forget about other colors? It would have worked if he was trying to draw some sort of parallel or comparison, but that never happens. And I apologize if I spelled names wrong - I listened to the audiobooks.

Overall? Needed more boats. I liked the elder stuff, but I don't read too much contemporary fantasy so it also might be cliched. Still, it's new to me. Very soft 3/4. Leaning towards 2 stars, but in the end I did read and enjoy 6 books, so 3/4 feels more right. If it was really a 2 star series, I think I would have dropped it.

What should I read next? This series got me in the mood for some romance if anyone has suggestions there.

I am looking for a dark fantasy series with intense rape, pitch black seed, highly intellectual themes (cuckoldry) that dovetail into real world fetishes, pungent anal sex, and just a hint of Lovecraftian futa. Is there anything out there like this?

Also the ninja sections were a slog. I'm frozen at book 2 for years because I don't want to read the girl's POV. It's literally the worst.

Did you read the author's other series, House of Blades? It's another animesque series about swords. It was fun.

That was internet culture at its peak. I actually didn't notice since there's basically no boats after the first three chapters and no piracy in it at all, and actually, that makes me think of it a bit more highly.

You're not missing much. Especially at the beginning, Shera starts as a pretty shitty character ripped straight from a generic shonen anime. She just cares about sleeping and eating and mentions that repeatedly. While Mea doesn't really have a character at all. I would have loved some romance drama between the three of them with Mea jealous and upset that her chimera enhancements made her unlovable or something. It gets a little bit better, but it's definitely the b-plot. I'll keep that in mind, but I'm not looking for more anime right now,

This shit is fucked really. I want to get some nicely bound books. Dune, maybe Silmarillion. Someone recommended me folio society, the dune book looks really cool, but it's a hundred euros which I find preposterous really. The Silmarillion one has artwork that doesn't even fit the story which is kind of weird. I checked the second hand sites but for some weird reason they barely have any books that people are selling. What do I do? I just want to hold a nice book instead of some garbage paperback.

Ronald Scott Bakker hammered his knife into the heavy table. Bowls, platters, and anon all jumped. “This,” he grated. “This! This is what the world is in truth!”

Anon swallowed, somehow managed to maintain his façade of good humour. “And what might that be?”

The author grinned. “Even now, it moves you.”

Anon licked his lips. Fine features tightened about clenched teeth. Why did anger always look so bland on beautiful faces? “I can assure you,” anon said evenly, “I fear no—”

Bakker struck, cuffed him so hard he toppled backward.

“You act as though you live this life a second time!” Bakker leapt into a crouch upon the table, sent plates and bowls spinning. Eyes as round as silver talents, anon scrambled backward through the cushions. “As though you were assured of its outcome!”

Anon had turned, was fighting his way clear of the depression. “Janny-Janny—!” Bakker vaulted across the table, hammered the back of his head. The imageboard poster went down. Bakker unfastened his belt, snapped it free. He yanked it about the sobbing man’s neck, hoisted him to his knees. He wrenched him back to the table, threw him onto his chest. He smashed his face against its own reflection—once, twice …

He looked up, saw the /sffg/ lurkers cringing in the shadows, their arms upraised. One of them wept.

“I am a demon!” he cried. “A demon!”

Then he turned back to anon shuddering on the table beneath him.

Some things required literal explanation.

>"The term is 'cultural meme,'" Malcolm said, leaning back. "Memes hold on for remarkably long periods of time. Gael children were raised with the words murmured to them by their mothers, who had forgotten the meaning but liked the tune as a lullaby. You can find it anywhere that there was a strong strain of the Scots Gael, the southeast of Norau for example, or Anarchia before it was shifted. And here in the Highlands the strain is strong and deep. Hell, the theme of 'the king will return' permeates all Indo-European cultures. It's a philosophical basis for the Christ myth that existed long before he did or did not actually live. I can help Norau ride that meme to victory."

Some are and some aren't. Well respected anthologies might be a better overall choice (or just "collected stories of" if you are looking for a specific author) but there will still be dozens of stories worth reading in those magazines because it was so common for the big names to feature in them.

hey ssfg, read the charts and couldnt really find what i was looking for.

I'm a big fan of Sci fi and Fantasy (Read/loved Peter F Hamilton, Frontlines (LOVED Frontlines!) Castle Federation, things like that, more hard sci fi but ok with some soft. Star carrier is next on my list.

I also deeply love fantasy, urban and traditional. Wheel, Dune, Alex Verus, Mistborn, Dresden, etc.

I was looking for series that have "fantasy, but in space". Like star wars is really just fantasy in space, but I would love a more hard sci fantasy novel that also included sci fi/space travel. Specifically, a Sanderson type of hard magic system but also with space tech.

Thinking about it would be if Frontlines Sci-fi setting had a magic system like Sanderson/Wheel in it.

I havent been able to find almost any series that has magic + space and is worth reading (besides dune). Any suggestions?

how tf is severian "genderfluid" in any way/shape/form? post adaleptic azalbo, his personality clearly maintains dominance, and thecla's only pops up every now and then with random memories or pushing for mercy.

dude is also pretty obsessed with his penis/sword and dicks pretty much any woman he can.

you'd have a much stronger case if you wanted to say he is enamored of himself and uses women as a means to that end, but nothing in BotNS suggests he's genderfluid beyond you skimming past the adaleptic alzabo scene and then ignoring subsequent text.

pretty sure madness edited more than just TUC. pretty sure madness was the idiot behind the push to have bakker try pressuring his publisher with an astroturfed fandom, only to have someone mildly intelligent immediately see right through it and put bakker on a DO NOT PUBLISH list throughout the industry.

madness released so many garbage "spoilers" of TGO and TUC that were all completely wrong, it drove half of the users over at the 3 seas forum crazy, and then had the gall to act like it was all just because he'd gone off his meds. says a lot that bakker trusted an idiot like this.

Ancient evil wakes from eons old sleep, and pits its strength against the world of man…

Brand, exiled since his youth from the land he should rightfully rule, returns home. But nothing is as it seems, and the usurper who murdered his parents and sent countless assassins to kill him is not his greatest threat.

A magician serves the usurper, and his power is of a kind both deadly and rare. Brand does not know of his existence, but the magician divines his coming and his purpose. He cannot let Brand live, for he is the sort of man who can tumble thrones and challenge fate itself.

Brand, intent on righting past wrongs, gathers an army as he journeys. But enemies beset him. Beasts of magic hunt him. And the pale swordsman who is not a man stalks him across the land. Brand enters a world of magic, a time of chaos and a crossroads of destiny. For a dark shadow of evil reaches forth to conquer, and one man will not stop it, nor will one kingdom sate its lust for dominion…

Scifi is anti-sex, it removes your bodycount. So, if you fucked say 10 women, and then read a sci-fi novel, your mind reverts to that of a man who fucked 9 women. Logically, you can see that virgins who read sci-fi plunge into a kind of ubervirginity with a negative bodycount. Such people are usually insane, obese, and have body dysmorphia
