19893779 No.19893779 [Reply] [Original]

I know Spanish and English. Currently I'm learning French and Chinese. Those are my main core for me. My goal is to aim for six or seven languages that can provide me with long term usefulness, business opportunities, and ample literature, but also movies and songs as well.

I know that I have to learn German, so that's 5 out of 7. What languages do you guys think that can fulfill my quota?

you don't have to learn German. However, you do need to learn Russian.

Why not German? Large population, motor of Europe, has some good movies and books. Honestly I'd be learning German instead of Chinese right now, but such is life.

>french
why?
I'm fluent in both Spanish and English, currently learning Mandarin, I don't have any intentions of learning another language save for some literary value: Portuguese (for Pessoa) Russian (for many authors) and Italian (for Dante)

I don't know but here's what I'd like to learn
>english (native)
>spanish (learning)
>french
>german
>portuguese

>something exotic, non-indoeuro
>a classical language, sanskrit, greek or roman

would probably take me til I'm 50 to learn all that, still nice to dream

The French have amazing media, BDs, good movies, good music and good songs too. It's a must learn language.

The French HAD good NON-FICTION books. And maybe some good movies.
But that's it. Their songs the older ones are full of cliches, the new ones are about "les putes" and their tv series suck so much; the plot always has holes and badly written.

Obviously to "romance" women. If he's from the US, spanish wouldn't be that exotic, but french would make his hypothetical women wet. Hypothetical bc this is 4chan and no one on here gets laid

Well I've always liked France, plus now I can visit France and Québec.

Ok, you can learn German.
But only if you read Der Zauberberg.

What do you like about France?

Their language (ex. France is NOT faggot sounding)
Their history
The BDs, reading Tintin and Astérix in their original languages really feels different.
Their songs, I like hearing to them
Lots of books to pick from.
French dubs is awesome! (Especially in series and cartoons)
Movies (But I haven't watched more than Amelie, a few recommendations could help)

The French have great poetry and comics. Not sure what you're downplaying their artistic contributions.

I'm not a faggot who reads comics, and no I disagree French poetry sucks ass, just like their fiction

You're missing out big time, man.

Most comic books are for mentally retarded people:
- no depth of characterization (hot woman (who probably smokes), villain with overused motives...)
-images to substitute words to keep you interested, because you'll bail on anything longer than the total of 20 pages in writing

As for the supremacy of french poetry, I'm still waiting on that example.

I'm considering learning Chinese but only to read

>> No.19894866

Those are the languages that I know or that I want to know one day.

French (native)
English (fluent)
Spanish (improving)
Italian (will start to learn soon)
Russian
German

Latin (learning)
Ancient Greek

Those are the languages I am interested in but will probably never learn due to lack of time or probably brainspace at one point.

Japanese
Chinese
Arabic

Sanskrit
Ancient hebrew

> My goal is to aim for six or seven languages that can provide me with long term usefulness, business opportunities, and ample literature, but also movies and songs as well.

I thought this way when I was a teenager. I’m now 30 and speak English outside and Japanese at home and at work, and that is more than plenty. There’s only so many hours in the day.

A language is like a girlfriend, either you spend time with her or she leaves you. Six or seven languages is a harem. Only an idle king can maintain such a thing.

I can (or once could) read and speak a handful of Romance languages, which I suppose has been fun, but they haven’t been particularly useful this decade and I doubt they ever will be. The time I spent learning them might have been as profitably spent reading their literature in translation.

Which is not to say that I don’t still study languages - Japanese alone is a depthless trove of wonders - but I do so for the inherent joy of it, not any application I might put it to.
