19892565 No.19892565 [Reply] [Original]

Are there any good books/articles/anything about people who have mentally opted out of society? Stuff like NHK exists but I'm looking for an outside approach that would focus on the general mental health of such people.

Like what makes or stops them from ticking?

shutting out the sun is a decent journalistic about hikkikomori, if you want something particular to that culture

Idk about non-fiction, but recently I read this VN about a hikikomori. It does a pretty good job of getting you inside his head, so if you're interested in the psychological aspect of somebody actively rejecting the outside world, you might appreciate it. Picrelated

being a shut in is a symptom of mental illness and not a great moral stand. hermits exit society as a conscious sacrifice, hikikomori do it because they've got a screw loose. literally the same category as hoarders

Hikkis exist because they got no other place and there are going to be a lot of em. It's not about mental health but the inability to produce value through your labor

it's societal pressure. There's a reason why this happens in places like japan more than elsewhere.

hikkis is a catch-all term for shut-ins, and each hikki has potentially wildly different reasons for their situation. a lot of it is societal/economic, but many will be longterm depressed etc/ difficult family life. a lot of smart and capable people end up in holes that are difficult to crawl out of in many developed countries
