19885920 No.19885920 [Reply] [Original]

I will read the Bible. What’s the best translation (I’ve been recommended Douay-Rheims) and version of the book with the most books. And what version of the book is the mainstream? Catholic? prot version? Also what’s the best way to read it on my phone?

Catholic, Douay-Rheims, nothing else tops it in the English-speaking world.

MySwordBible on Android, but I think they took it off the Playstore.

I'd go for Knox over DR, way more readable.

I’m on iPhone. Also do the prot, catholic, and orthodox bibles have largely the same books? I’m not missing much if I read douay-rheims right?

Have 2 side by side, you can do that on biblegateway
New English Translation (NET) has a ton of notes that can be helpful. But can't go wrong with King James.

You don't miss anything. The Orthodox Bible has more books than the Catholic Bible but they are not of great spiritual value, except 4th Esdras, and not every Orthodox Bible has it. If you are desperate about having the "full" canon, go for a KJV with Apocrypha or a 1611 KJV facsimile; this kind of KJB is the only acceptalbe Protestant Bible, all other are pure trash - the ESV is passable but why would you settle for less if you have the DRB or KJB? An honorable mention is Rotherham's Emphasized Bible but this is if you are advanced in your biblical reading. The Orthodox Study Bible is a meme and doesn't even use the real Septuagint for the Old Testament.

So yes, Douay Rheims all the way.

My Bible just showed up today. I am pretty excited to start reading it. I don't really have a plan, besides starting on page one.

Douay-Rheims is acceptable-ish. It contains translation errors; Moses with the rams horns the angel of the pool et cetera. KJV is fine for pretty poetry, but it's 200% bad at conveying the meaning of scripture so its worthless. And it was written by/for Protestant heretics besides. NRSV is what you want. NAB (New American Bible) is good too.

>Also what’s the best way to read it on my phone?
Download a .mobi or .pdf of your NAB/NRSV bible and read it that way.

No they don't have the same books. You want a Catholic bible. Prots removed some of the Maccabees from their bibles because Luther didn't agree with some of them.

Orthodox and Catholic Bibles have the Apocrypha, Protestant Bibles do not, but you can read a Protestant Bible just the same. You can also get any regular KJV and buy the Cambridge KJV Apocrypha which is a $10 sewn booklet.
Readings change slightly depending on translation. Newer translations like NRSV have things like "gender neutral" language that is contentious because it forces political correctness that goes against the accuracy of the translation (word clearly says "male person", NRSV says "any person") and other changes that are much worse because they impact doctrinal stuff.
KJV is peak English and is much more memorable than any other version, and impacted the English language substantially to the point where you may not even know you're quoting it.

I just looked up the New Revised Standard Version and noticed it has every single book so I might read it. Does sound good to read? Similar to the Yusuf Ali translation of the Quran? And for anyone else on this thread do you recommend this translation?

Orthodox Study Bible if you want to read and study the Bible for religious study/spiritual growth. The King James Version if you want to read it as mythology or a piece of literature.
