Every day this thread.

>stare at the table of contents for a really long time
>summarize every section in your own words after you've read it
>compare your summaries with the text
>think about themes
>re-read

There, saved you 10 hours.

Underline important or interesting parts while you read "study it" don't just read it. It takes twice as long doing it this way, but it is worth it if it is a book that is worth it.

You're not supposed to memorize every single thing you read. If you're seriously studying a book, read it twice, take notes, underline, etc., for more advice on that, read A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations instead since it gives you good advice both on reading and writing. How to Read a Book is meme tier.

I used to feel the same way anon, but if the goal is to extract as much information and insight from the book as possible and underlining and highlighting help; I would rather ruin this collection of material paper than sacrify that. I can buy another book, dummy.

Engage with the material. It's the only way to really remember what you read. Ask questions, savor the imagery, make associations, say certain words out loud while you're reading, especially if they are rare or particularly representative of the stream of thought.

There's a music to thought. You don't need to take notes to remember how a song goes, do you? If you find the melody of the words, remembering the ideas is trivial.

Don't subscribe to formulae. Don't think you'll find the answer in a book. You must find the will to penetrate words. You must find the woman in them. Then your libido will synergistically find her (truth).

It breaks down how to read for people who are not interested in reading but want to be.

Ex, first few pages tell you to forget about what your elementary teachers told you how to read. Then it dives into different levels of reading (I'll shorten it):

There are basically four levels of reading for kids to understand if they want to graduate from rudimentary/elementary reading. First level is only identifying words in its simplest sense ex "The cat sits on a chair" ("What does this sentence say?"). The second is inspectional reading, which is getting the most out of a book within a given time (systematic skimming). You learn to examine the book's surface ("What is the book about?"). The third level is analytical reading. If the second level is the most complete reading in a given time, the third one is devoted to the best and most complete reading given in unlimited time. Analytical reading is hardly important if your goal is simply information or entertainment. Probably best level for reports and research.

Last level is syntopical reading. At this point you've read plentyof books to construct your own analysis of comparative texts.

The other points in the book will tell you how to read different types of books, but if you understood the first few pages, you should be fine to just start reading. It's a good book to give to a friend who has trouble reading a book or staying interested in one.

it is pretty much this. That said this book did help me personally. I Thinking reading things a few times and then writing about what you read after to be helpful.
