Am I just a brainlet or did anyone else have to take notes while reading this?
I find it very hard to keep track of who's related to who and who's doing what in my head

You are related to me, dear(Your mother can confirm this). You don't have to take notes.

P.S You are a brainlet btw.

You're not a brainlet anon, I also had to take notes. Tolstoy just introduces too many characters at one.

You're a brainlet, anon. I didn't have to take notes. Tolstoy doesn't introduce so many characters at once that you can't remember them.

but really after like the first book, you pretty much know who everyone is. the reason you have to take notes is probably because you are an autist or obsessive compulsive and think that you have to remember every single character as if the full name and nickname of peasant #2348 is essential to the story. You are probably the same autists who make threads about how reading is pointless because they don't remember every single detail of what they read.

Kind of a brainlet. I suppose it's more difficult to remember the names if you are not Russian and aren't familiar with the names. But then again, there aren't that many names to remember. There are a few principal characters and many minor ones that you don't really need to remember aside from knowing who they are: "Pfuel - war nerd, Anatole - Helen's hot brother, Dolokhiv - gigachad, etc." and Tolstoy naturally reminds you who they are whenever they come after a long absence.

All Russian novels are like that. You learn to just ignore that stuff and go with the flow

do whatever work's for your enjoyment of the book anon. You get out of it what you put in. Don't discount any way of reading just because insecure retards on /lit/ said so

Nah, russians have an unfamiliar naming system and Tolstoy introduces many characters. When I read Demons there was a helpful index at the beginning of the book listing character names and their family trees.

The only important character are Pierre, Andrei, Natasha, Napoleon and maybe Nikolai. Fuck the rest

by all means use a character reference list, this is not controversial or stupid. especially if you multiple books at a time, dropping in and out of them every so often
