19870337 No.19870337 [Reply] [Original]

Is there a book on how to be one's true self? Most self help books just chant 'be yourself' repeatedly without explaining much else. Might sound autistic but in a given situation I'm often at a loss how my 'true' self would handle the matter and end up acting even more retardly.

Send advice and book recommendations.

>Is there a book on how to be one's true self?
Read the Bhagavad-Gita and then the Upanishads, most modern 'self-help books' talk about the false egoistic self and not the true self that is resplendent, immortal, ever-fulfilled and all-pervasive

Why on earth are you investing any thought into such as stupidly vague statement? Does anyone you actually respect, anyone who has the qualities you'd like to emulate ever suggested that people 'be themself'?
But since I've taken the bait, I'll give the prosaic answer: Be yourself just means to do things that don't cause value dissonance and which come easy or intuitively to you, especially in contrast to taking on behaviors in a social setting where because they are not a natural habit both will come off as 'forced' to other people which in itself will cause you to be self-conscious which will further exacerbate the forcefulness.
The problem is that this neglects any ideas of personal growth - something has to be conscious and intentional before it becomes a natural habit.
Not going to the gym is "be yourself" if you're so inclined.

This book unironically helped me a lot with this. It's not about acting as something but acting without masks basically, that is your true self.

you are still constrained by social rules anon. being yourself is not an excuse to break rules of propriety. be as honest as you can, but don't cause unnecessary conflict or other problems for yourself or others

There is no true self, just a large bunch of small and big signifiers that you use to construct a persona in order to make yourself definable in front of yourself and more importantly others

There is no true self.
We adapt and change our beliefs over time, we also modify our beliefs depending on the circumstance.

Your knowledge, beliefs and personality are you. The voice inside of you is the delusion, the one that tells us stories about who we 'really are'. It's why most people act like they are the center of their own universe and get irrationally angry at people who they see as threatening the story.

Fundamentally, what you present to the outside world is you.

You have full ownership over that. And don't let anyone project onto you or 'tell you' who you ought to be

Don't be too hard on yourself. The best thing you can do is find equilibrium with the forces that control your life, and present the most genuine-feeling version of yourself that you can. This will change constantly. Don't ever attempt to be someone else, because you only see one face of a person, and you can't successfully emulate their success from YOUR perspective.

if the problem is with how you interact with the world then you may have encountered problems in socialization

you need therapy in that case.
