19863725 No.19863725 [Reply] [Original]

Just came into possession of my Grandpa's ENORMOUS Steinbeck collection, pic related. Which one should I start with????

>> No.19863729

>>19863725
I liked Grapes of Wrath.

>> No.19863738

Remember to rehydrate between mindbreaks because he's gonna make you cry in most of those.

>Steinbros
>not Gertrude Stein
Damn I got excited for an actual decent thread...but no.

A steinbro is a steinbro is a steinbro

That's the only one your read, pseud

>> No.19863874

Cannery Row was mostly fun
But one very sad bit

>> No.19863882

start with the pearl

>> No.19863886

>>19863837
No, I’ve read a few of the novellas. I plan to read East of Eden, eventually.

>> No.19863894

>>19863781
Me too. We could try and take over the thread but I can not see that actually happening.

>> No.19863930

I know Cannery Row, the Pearl, Tortilla Flat, East of Eden, and GOW. Otherwise I've never heard of any the other ones.

>> No.19863951

>>19863882
I tried reading this in middle school and got really bored lol. I have to try this one again.

OP here, any Gertrude recs?

>> No.19864054

Do yourself a favor and read East of Eden. People like to shit on it and/or compare it to Grapes, but to do either is ridiculous. It's a beautiful story, one of my favorites

>> No.19864104

>>19864054
I've been really curious about it. Do you think it's better than Grapes?

>> No.19864137

>>19863999
Start with Three Lives or the Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas. If you like Three Lives try The Making of Americans. If you like Autobiography, read her other autobiographical works. If you're feeling adventurous read Tender Buttons.

>> No.19864146

>>19863999
OP do not let these queers meme you into reading Gertrude Stein.

Oh fuck he even had cup of gold, mogs my stack.
Start with tortilla flat it will whet your appetite and make you crave more

>> No.19864315

>>19863999
Three Lives is the obvious/easiest entry but many a high schooler starts with Tender Buttons. If you are an Ulysses fag, than might as well dive into Making of Americans. Ignore the haters, they are just bitter because their idols could not make it without Gerttie's help.

>> No.19864326

Is East of Eden good? What do you think of it?

>> No.19864775

>>19864104
I do, but that's just personal opinion. They're both very great books, but Eden just scratched my particular itch

>> No.19864790

>>19864326
Eden is vastly superior to anything else he's written (yes, especially GoW, which is a borderline propaganda piece). I recommend you read the journal he kept while he was writing it at the same time, for a truly sublime experience.

>> No.19864823

>>19864790
Based, where do you find the journal he kept?

>> No.19864841

>>19864823
I believe it's been published under the title: Journal of a Novel (or something like that). I don't know of a comfier book desu (except perhaps some chapters of Moby Dick).

Alright, at this point I’m thinking of reading Tortilla Flat first and then East of Eden, judging by the responses I’ve gotten here. Thanks anons. :)

>> No.19866010

>>19865887
Excellent choice, anon. I've come to tell you I loved East of Eden.

>> No.19866222

Start with Tortilla Flat and Cannery Row.

East of Eden is beautiful

>> No.19866228

Cannery Row is a sequel to Tortilla Flat so you should probably read them in sequence, t bh.
