I really don't like anything about it. Just some of the most boring writing I have ever read.

RAPED AND GAPED

I think it did a great job describing physical things he would do that would allude to his emotional state in the same way a good film has actors that have a good performances to express what the character is feeling without blatantly saying it.

in other words good use of show dont tell. But what do I know, Im a normie.

What kind of deep analysis can anyone have with the text? Everything I’ve seen for discussion is usually focused on whether or not the wife was raped as a girl or what level of hatred we should feel towards the antagonism.

That’s the point I’m getting at. It’s a fine story, and for what it sets out to do, it accomplishes: a character study of someone very ordinary.

There is no complexity to the characters, no moral ambiguity or deep meditation on really anything beyond what is practically made explicit in the text. We are meant to feel coherence with the text, not ambivalence, which is why this is a very enjoyable book but not one that leaves me wondering if I could interpret it any other way, which precludes the necessity to read it again.

I welcome your disagreement, because I loved the book, and if there was something there worth visiting again, I would jump at the opportunity. Instead, it remains on the shelf to be lent out if anyone asks.

It’s been like 7 years since I read it and I never think about it except when I’m drawn back to /lit/

It’s a fine story but totally unexceptional, idk why this community has such a high opinion of it

anything is better than being cast in with you lot. I just meant I am not that much of a reader or have a lit or philosophy degree.

One thing I wonder about is if his love with the student was something that actually would have lasted. The text itself is every explicit about the purity and strength of their love but if they were together would it have grayed and darkened like his marriage?
Also I strongly disagree with anons calling Stoner ordinary.
