i honestly don't even know.
i think saying that you "read" a book when you listened to it as a gross abuse of language.

i've read books i've listened to and certain paragraphs feel very different because the voice in my head had a way different tonality than the voice actor had reading it.

on the other hand, i listen to a lot of stuff, and my retention of the materials i listen to is pretty damn high, so i really don't know what to make of all of that

if someone figures out a way to listen to a math textbook in a productive manner, post a guide or something, i can't for the life of me stand someone rattling off fractions and i don't know how a math audiobook would do it any other way

Audio books are passive while reading is active. That's the difference. That's the post. This thread has happened too many times for me to write something longer.

you can't really rethink what you just read, read it again, make notices in the text and stuff like that... I would never listen to someone reading me a good book... I had to read it myself with a pencil in my hand...

Audiolets. Nothing is stopping you from rewinding or pressing stop to think what you read. Hell, nothing stops you from thinking or are you someone with goldfishes memory?

I personally prefer audiobooks for non-fiction. They give me more time to take in the information as I'm a fast reader.

Don't worry, faggot, to me you're both pathetic reatrds... Though I have compassion for nature's garbage; you, being a loser, spend your time finding ways to feel superior as a brief respite from self-awareness, for which I feel sadness and empathy, as I say.

audiobooks are good if you work a mundane job where you can pop in earbuds. I did landscaping every summer in college and listened to tons of books while riding around on a lawnmower, it was pretty cozy. that being said I prefer reading a physical book.

I consume them very differently, with an audiobook I usually either do something else at the same time, listen while commuting or listen to it while trying to fall asleep.
Reading is an actually active process.

With books, I need to readjust my furniture to get the most out of the shitty lighting, but with audiobooks I can cook, clean, or even walk while getting the information from the book. If I really have nothing to do, I prefer gaming to reading. Audiobooks are for time that would be wasted otherwise.

I've listened to audio books and short story podcasts and enjoy them but I greatly prefer reading things for myself. As a writer it's much more enjoyable and useful to take in the actual art, technique, and structure of someone's writing. If you just listen to someone else read it you will lose all of that.

My friend has the ability to hear any song and immediately know how to play it across multiple instruments. But if you were to show him a sheet of music he wouldn't even know where to begin. It's fascinating to me that you could do one but not the other and still be better than 90% of the people out there.

I both listen to audiobooks and read real books. What I've found is that audiobooks can be equivalent to reading, but with denser texts I find it easier to digest if I'm actually reading to it. Hence I typically listen to fantasy/sci-fi/lighter reading (ASOIAF, Earthsea, Tom Sawyer), and physically read denser works (Steinbeck, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, etc.). There have been times where I've started listening to an audiobook and decided I needed to switch to a physical copy.
